Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Program Manager for the Office of Market News within the Division of Marketing and Development. This position will lead programs that deliver timely, accurate, and meaningful market information to Virginia’s agricultural industry. The Program Manager will lead and coordinate Market News program activities for livestock, grain, fruit, and vegetable commodities. This position oversees staff and daily market reporting, ensuring information is accurate, timely, and compliant with USDA requirements. The Program Manager will train and guide staff in proper data collection and reporting procedures and will monitor the quality and timeliness of market news reports from multiple locations. The position will manage the development, editing, and distribution of weekly and monthly market publications, including Cattle and Crops, Hay Clearing House, and Retail Farmers Markets newsletters. The position requires maintaining a broad knowledge of agricultural commodity marketing and staying current with industry trends and needs through seminars, industry meetings, trade publications, and other professional resources. The position requires strong analytical, communication, organizational, and leadership skills, as well as a commitment to maintaining accurate, timely, and useful market information for Virginia’s agricultural industry. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in the agricultural industry, including marketing principles, product marketing, and market analysis. Experience with print and broadcast media in a market information program. Ability to analyze market data from multiple sale locations and create presentations and reports. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, leadership ability, and sound decision‑making skills. Experience in managing or supervising. Requires computer literacy and strong interpersonal skills for excellent internal and external customer service. Must have or be eligible for a valid driver’s license with a responsible driving record and USDA market reporter certification. High school diploma or GED and. required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities to include public administration, business administration, marketing or agriculture. Experience in project management, accounting/budgeting and procurement. Knowledge of agricultural commodity marketing.
