About the Position

Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center (WWRC) is seeking an Independent Living Instructor to teach a job and independent living skills class eight days per month on second shift. This position will serve as the primary facilitator and team leader for all sections of the PERT Independent Living Skills Assessment and Training, which takes place on second shift during a PERT Career Exploration or PERT Transition Academy intake.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

• Set up the assessment area and ensure all materials and equipment are prepared for daily operations.
• Facilitate Independent Living Skills assessments and support student engagement throughout the process.
• Collaborate with PERT residential staff to provide raw ratings and support accurate student evaluations.
• Compile raw scores and prepare Independent Living (IL) reports as part of the final PERT Residential assessment.
• Maintain clear, timely, and accurate documentation of student performance, behavioral observations, and assessment findings.
• Communicate daily with PERT staff to support continuity of programming, learning goals, and student progress.
• Complete an average of eight Independent Living Assessment Reports per intake, including both Initial and Transition Academy assessments.
• Submit all reports and score data sheets within five business days post‑discharge.

This is a wage (part‑time) position that will work an average of 20 hours per week and cannot exceed 1500 hours during the employment year. This position does not include health insurance, retirement, or leave benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

This position should be able to teach a job and independent livings skills class eight days per month on 2nd shift.

Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in teaching methods and techniques, learning style assessments and intervention strategies, disability characteristics and needs, basic workplace literacy needs, curriculum development, classroom and behavior management, Basic special education requirements for IEP development and implementation. Prefer experience teaching independent living skills and special education programs for students with disabilities.

Additional Considerations

Education, Experience, Licensure, and Certification 

Applicants are preferred to possess a Virginia Department of Education Collegiate or Postgraduate Professional License, preferably with an endorsement in Special Education, or a Technical Professional License with an endorsement in Vocational Education. A combination of relevant education and experience will also be considered.
