Job Duties

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Welding Instructor. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center provides access to higher education, workforce training, and innovative industry services through technologically advanced facilities and learning labs. The organization delivers comprehensive fiscal, operational, and support services while engaging the community through outreach and broad collaborations. Together, these components strengthen the Center’s mission to advance Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and partnership.

The Welding Instructor is responsible for planning, developing, and teaching welding courses while providing hands on training that prepares students with the skills and knowledge needed to be job ready and successful. In addition to instructional duties, the instructor will assist with inventory management, ensure equipment is properly maintained and operational, and engage with employer partners to better understand and meet workforce needs. This position reports to the Welding Program Leader.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive experience in welding

Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following types of welding: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick Welding), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG Welding), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG Welding) or Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

Demonstrated ability to develop programs and apply curricula to satisfy VDOE, VCCS, and industry needs

Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

Demonstrated ability to maintain performance records and documents

Demonstrated ability to utilize technology to enhance teaching and the education experience

Demonstrated ability to establish meaningful learning methods that result in measurable outcomes

Proven successful customer service experience with working knowledge of team practices and procedures

Demonstrated ability to work with educational and corporate partners as well as high school, adult non-traditional learners, and other workforce stakeholders

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and have presentation skills

Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

High school graduate or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification. Current facilitator, training, or state Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching credential.
