Job Duties
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Energy/Electrical Instructor to support its mission of advancing Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration. This position provides high-quality instruction and hands-on training in Energy and Electrical Trades to students enrolled in workforce credentialing and academic programs. The Energy/Electrical Instructor is responsible for developing and delivering classroom and hands-on technical instruction that prepares students for careers in the energy and electrical industries. Instruction will provide foundational knowledge of energy systems, including power generation, transmission, distribution, electrical infrastructure, and emerging energy technologies. The instructor will provide comprehensive training aligned with NCCER Electrical Levels 1–4, covering electrical safety, theory, circuits, wiring, motors and controls, transformers, electrical distribution, troubleshooting, and applicable National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements. The position will develop and maintain instructional materials, laboratory activities, and assessments while ensuring a safe, industry-relevant learning environment. The instructor will work with educational and industry partners to ensure training supports industry standards, workforce needs, industry-recognized credentials, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities. This position reports to the Director of Workforce Training Programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of electrical or energy systems, including electrical theory, power generation, transmission and distribution, AC/DC circuits, electrical components, wiring methods, motors and motor controls, transformers, electrical drawings and schematics, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting; Extensive residential, commercial, or industrial work experience in the electrical trade, energy industry, or related fields; Ability to apply electrical and energy-related knowledge to design hands-on labs based on real-world scenarios for training purposes; Demonstrated ability to engage with and develop positive working relationships with employers, learners, and other stakeholders; Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences; Intermediate to advanced digital literacy, including proficiency using word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications. Must be effective operating in a fast-paced environment and readily adaptable to changes as needed. Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment; Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills; Excellent time management skills, including proven ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. High school graduate or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification. Certifications in National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), Journeyman Electrician. Current facilitator, training, or state Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching credential.
