Job Duties
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking to hire a Trades Utilities Master Mechanic located in the Fairfax Northern Virginia region. The role is responsible for ensuring that all DMV facilities within the district remain fully functional, safe, and compliant with state and federal regulations. This includes managing and performing repairs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and other essential building systems. Additionally, the position supports emergency preparedness, coordinates with external vendors for specialized maintenance needs, and upholds DMV and OSHA safety standards to provide a secure, operational environment for employees and customers.
Facilities are comprised of three subdivisions: Planning and Design (PD), Maintenance and Operations (O&M), and Property and Asset Management (PAM). PD oversees construction, repairs, and inspections, ensuring projects meet safety, quality, and budget standards. O&M keeps facilities and equipment operational, supporting compliance and technical services. It ensures preventative maintenance activities and schedules, and maintenance are maintained. PAM optimizes tools equipment and organic materials, manages properties, and oversees key programs like fleet transportation and risk management. These facilities all work together to ensure DMV's resources are efficiently managed and ensures DMV operates smoothly and efficiently while being prepared for emergencies.
The work environment can vary widely based on the tasks being performed. While administrative tasks occur in a standard office or remote setting, maintenance activities often involve hazardous conditions, including exposure to high noise levels, extreme heat, or cold, and potential safety risks. Flexibility and situational awareness are essential, as daily tasks and environmental conditions are highly variable.
The position’s hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility for occasional weekend work, on-call duty, and overtime as needed. As emergency staff, the technician must be ready to respond promptly to critical facility issues to maintain safe, functional DMV operations.
Travel is relegated to assigned DMV properties with occasional travel to neighboring districts to assist other technicians or training opportunities. Maintenance vehicles are assigned to each mechanic. Duties may have occasional overnight stays if the work projects or training classes extends beyond a single day. Travel is typically within the state and scheduled in advance. Lodging, meals, expenses, and incidentals are reimbursed.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, serves approximately 6.2 million licensed drivers and ID card holders with over 8.4 million registered vehicles.
