Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of Summer 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Psychology Supervisor who is passionate about leading a dynamic clinical team in a maximum‑security forensic setting. This role offers the opportunity to provide expert supervision, deliver high‑quality psychological services and assessments, and help shape a culture rooted in recovery, person‑centered care, and safety. We’re looking for a motivated leader who thrives on collaboration, supports staff development, and is committed to excellence in treatment, evaluation, and evidence‑based practice. If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact and guide a dedicated team toward outstanding results, we want to hear from you.

The selected candidate will have:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing individual and group clinical interventions, as well as conducting comprehensive psychological and forensic assessments.
- Training and experience in clinical assessment, psychotherapy, report writing, and consultation relevant to both clinical and forensic psychological services.
- Strong competence and applied knowledge in psychopathology, personality theory, and the psychological assessment process.
- The ability to present and testify effectively in court settings.

Minimum Qualifications

- Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in Clinical Psychology or a closely related field.
- Current licensure as a Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or eligibility for licensure within six (6) months of hire.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing individual and group clinical interventions, as well as conducting psychological and forensic assessments.

Additional Considerations

Preferred Qualifications:

- Previous experience as a clinical/forensic supervisor is preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience and experience working in an inpatient setting with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness preferred.
