Join Our Team at Central State Hospital
Central State Hospital is seeking an experienced Project Manager to help lead a once-in-a-career initiative: the activation of our new state-of-the-art hospital and the operational transition from our existing facility.
This is not a traditional project management role. Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Project Manager will coordinate the people, processes, systems, vendors, and operational activities necessary to safely and successfully open the new hospital.
This is a restricted position with funding anticipated for approximately two to three years based on the duration of the new hospital activation and transition project.
About Central State Hospital
Central State Hospital (CSH), located in Petersburg, Virginia, is a 277-bed, Joint Commission-accredited psychiatric inpatient facility serving individuals with complex behavioral health needs. Since opening in 1870, CSH has proudly served the citizens of the Commonwealth through individualized, recovery-focused care.
This is an exciting time to join CSH as we prepare to open a new, modern hospital designed to support high-quality care and an enhanced environment for patients and employees.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, milestones, risk logs, and performance-tracking tools.
- Coordinate hospital activation, move sequencing, departmental relocation, and go-live activities.
- Lead cross-functional teams to support operational readiness across clinical, administrative, and support services.
- Collaborate with hospital leadership, construction teams, architects, contractors, vendors, and regulatory partners.
- Coordinate equipment installation, testing, staff orientation, workflow redesign, and inspection readiness.
- Monitor project risks, budgets, vendor deliverables, and contractual milestones.
- Prepare executive-level reports, dashboards, briefings, and stakeholder communications.
- Help ensure patient safety and continuity of care throughout the transition.
What We’re Looking For
Skills and experience required:
We seek a candidate with construction project management experience, including managing complex initiatives involving multiple departments, stakeholders, and competing priorities. We also seek the following:

- Experience working with OSHA, CMS, Joint Commission, or comparable regulatory requirements
- Knowledge of project scheduling, risk management, performance tracking, and regulatory readiness
- Strong analytical, organizational, negotiation, communication, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills
