Job Duties

The Department of General Services (DGS), Division of Capitol Square Services (DCSS), is hiring multiple Trades Professionals in general maintenance, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. DCSS is a customer‑focused team responsible for maintaining approximately 6.45 million square feet of facilities across the Capitol Square complex and the greater Richmond area. Our work supports more than 75 state and legislative agencies, including office buildings, the State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, and historic monuments.

We seek skilled Plumbers, Electricians, and HVAC Technicians—as well as general maintenance professionals—who are customer‑focused, adaptable, and dedicated to maintaining safe, efficient, and comfortable environments. Applicants do not need to possess all trade skills; we are hiring for multiple specialties and value strong collaboration within a multidisciplinary facilities team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to and troubleshoot a variety of service calls and maintenance requests within your trade specialty (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC).
  • Inspect equipment, document findings, and maintain written logs for preventive maintenance activities.
  • Support team members in other trades by assisting with general repair and maintenance tasks as needed.

Benefits and Development:
DGS invests in employee growth. Trades staff are eligible for education assistance and workforce development opportunities that support progression toward Journey‑ or Master‑level licensure. Hours worked in these positions count toward qualifying experience for trade license examination requirements.

DGS also offers comprehensive benefits, including affordable health insurance, pre‑tax spending accounts, paid life insurance, paid short‑ and long‑term disability, paid holidays, vacation and other leave options, wellness programs, and a state retirement plan with tax‑deferred savings and employer matching. DGS is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License

  • Skill in diagnosing equipment issues, identifying repair solutions, and using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment.

  • Skill in maintaining accurate maintenance records and documenting work performed.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with customers, supervisors, and team members.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, work conditions, and building needs.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and provide high-quality customer service in all interactions.
  • Basic computer skills required, including the use of email.

  • Licensed as a Journey or Master level Trades professional in one or more specialties.
