Norfolk State University (NSU) is a Historically Black University located in the city of Norfolk,
Virginia. The NSU campus enrollment is approximately 5,000 students, and the campus has a
rich tradition of undergraduate teaching and research. The physics department offers a BS in
physics, an MS in Materials Science, and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. Norfolk

The Department of Physics and the Center for Materials Research at Norfolk State University
(NSU)is seeking Postdoctoral Associates to conduct research in ultrafast spectroscopy of two dimensional (2D) quantum materials. The position is funded through the NSF Center for
Research and Education in Quantum-leap Science and Technology (CREQS) located in the
McDemmond Center for Applied Research on the campus of NSU.

The appointment is available starting August 2023, for a period of up to 36 months. The
successful candidate will lead the effort to study the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties
2D materials using the ultrafast laser facilities at NSU. Key responsibilities of the position are below:
- pump-probe measurements,
- characterization of linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities in new materials,
- Support in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Prepare project reports, scientific papers and technical presentations on the results of the
research.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD degree in Physics, Optics, Materials Science, Engineering, or a very closely related field. The applicant must demonstrate experience in nonlinear and ultrafast optics, ultrafast spectroscopy of 2D materials and a knowledge of condensed matter physics. The applicant should be able to communicate and mentor a diverse student-body of undergraduate and graduate students, work in collaboration with members of the CEQS research team, and have the capability to work independently.
