Job Duties

The mission of FRS is to advance the interests of the taxpayers of Virginia by providing legal advice and services to appropriately, cost-effectively, and aggressively secure recoveries on civil claims in favor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The position contributes to the section’s mission by providing legal support within the General District Court Litigation and Consumer Collections Unit. The position assists in prosecuting high- volume claims to collect delinquent accounts receivable arising from the provision of state goods and services, tort claims resulting from damage to state property, and more. The position is the primary contact for pro se debtors and defendants and participates with legal counsel in every phase of recovery until judgment is obtained. Essential tasks include conducting claim investigations, such as locating debtors, evidence, and assets; issuing legal demands for payment; negotiating settlements and payment plans; preparing legal documents, including warrants in debt, for filing in various state courts; responding to inquiries from client agencies, debtors, insurers, attorneys, and court personnel; and maintaining document and file control.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills and analytical ability; the ability to prioritize the demands of a high-volume caseload; considerable knowledge of legal principles, practices, and processes; and the ability to work both independently and as a team member to successfully complete complex assignments within prescribed time limits.
  • The position supports itself and requires word processing skills.
  • The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal background check and a valid driver’s license is required.

Additional Considerations

The preferred candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience providing support in a debt collection, plaintiffs’ litigation, or insurance defense firm; and experience with JST Collect max software or similar case management database software.
