Job Duties
Eastern State Hospital (ESH), located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH is recruiting BC/BE Psychiatrists with fully, unrestricted Virginia medical licenses to serve as Medical Officer on Duty (MOD) and provide onsite psychiatric/medical coverage. This position offers the flexibility to work weeknights, weekends and holidays and is a great opportunity for physicians looking to augment their income and gain experience in the assessment and triage of psychiatric and general medical conditions for a for an acute, adult inpatient population.
Highlights:
- Moonlighting shifts are 12-hours (weeknights and holidays) and 15-hours (weekends) and can be worked consecutively but cannot exceed 48 consecutive hours or 1,560 hours worked per calendar year.
- MOD must stay onsite for the entire shift and has access to a fully, furnished bedroom located in our MOD lounge.
- Must be available to work at least 2 shifts per month. Shifts are scheduled based on availability/preference.
- Malpractice insurance is covered by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Schedule:
Monday–Friday: 5:00 PM―8:00 AM (12-hour shift)
Weekends: 8:00 AM―8:00 PM and 8:00 PM―8:00 AM (15-hour shifts)
Holidays: 8:00 AM―5:00 PM and 5:00 PM―8:00 AM (12-hour shifts)
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.
- Completion or current enrollment in an accredited/approved psychiatry residency training program.
- Licensed to practice Medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Valid DEA Registration.

This position is a hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
