Job Duties

Serve Virginia's veterans and their family members by ensuring they receive the benefits, support, quality care, and recognition they have earned through service and sacrifice. This position is a working position responsible for completing all required functions towards locating grave/cremation sites within a specific garden section utilizing maps, pins and applicable measuring devices, then accomplishing the duties of opening and closing each site. This individual must be fully trained and have the ability to accomplish all listed functions in this section including operations of the cemeteries backhoe's, tractors, dump trucks, vault cart and other cemetery heavy equipment as applicable for that location. The Caretaker role is a working position that requires the individual to have solid knowledge and technical skills that will lead to the successful completion of all basic cemetery tasks assigned with minimal or no supervision. The Caretaker must have the ability to take control and accomplish assigned tasks individually or with the assistance of one or more employees assigned by the Cemetery Caretaker Manager to assist with the assigned specific tasks. This is a task-oriented position that requires the individual to work well within the team environment. Must neatly maintain as directed by the Cemetery Caretaker Manager all grounds areas, bush and mulch beds, gravesites, buildings inside and outside areas and familiar with placing temporary/permanent grave markers.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the Cemetery Caretaker Manager and or Cemetery Superintendent in matters concerning the veteran's cemetery. During summer months, the majority of your workload will consist of burial procedures, routine grounds turf and landscape bed maintenance to ensuring optimal performance in these areas. During winter months, the expectation of leveling and aligning headstones will be accomplished with attention to detail as instructed by Cemeteries Caretaker Manager/ Cemetery Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have learned all cemetery grounds maintenance procedures and practices. Must be familiar and qualified with all operations including garden/section maps, pins and gravesite numbering system for laying out each site. This individual must be capable of preventative maintenance in relationship to the cemeteries light and heavy equipment including the operation of power hand tools, capable of plastering, plumbing, and roof repairs and carpentry. Able to lift/maneuver with the help of one additional person a 220-pound grave marker.

Any combination of education and job experience that leads to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
High School education/GED or Cemetery experience of six months. The position requires a Valid Virginia driver's license.
Will be required to work some weekends.
