Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Financial Services seeks a highly motivated individual to work in the agency’s Finance Office. This position ensures the accurate recording and reporting of agency financial data per Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), state requirements, and agency policies. This position is also responsible for the accounts receivable and debt collection activities for the Hemp Enforcement and Food Safety programs. Additionally, this position assists with accounting and reporting of agency fixed assets including tracking and reporting intangible asset development; performs a variety of analyses, accounts receivables/billing, and journal entries. The successful candidate must exhibit the ability to interact professionally with everyone, have a desire to learn, and be able to focus on customer service without sacrificing compliance in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment. This position may require working extended hours during year-end close in order to meet Agency-mandated deadlines. Once onboard, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are needed for reporting principles and fiscal operations such as internal controls. Experience with day-to-day accounting transactions, adhering to policy and evaluating documents for accuracy and compliance. Demonstrated knowledge of accounts receivable and case management collections. Knowledge of tracking fixed assets. The successful candidate must have exceptional customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills along with attention to detail and effective oral & written communication skills. The applicant must also be a self-starter with the ability to read, learn, and apply policies and procedures in addition to being able to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced, automated environment. Have a basic understanding and capability of how to analyze, interpret, and apply financial policies and apply internal control concepts in addition to proficiency using a variety of accounting software. H.S. Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of Accounting, Business or Finance, current or recent experience related to basic accounting. Proficient data entry skills, effective computer skills, attention to accuracy and detail; and a proven ability to efficiently analyze and compile financial data for reporting purposes.
