About the Position

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an American Sign Language/Spoken English Interpreter to provide interpreting/transliterating services to students, staff, families, business partners, and those associated with VSDB campus.

This is a 10-month, classified position with state benefits, including vacation, health insurance, retirement, life insurance, and disability coverage.

The beginning date for this position is the beginning of our next school year in July 2025.

Job Duties
Responsibilities include:
• Proven interpreting and transliterating skills in American Sign Language, expressive and receptive as determined by State Quality Assurance or National Credentials
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
• Ability to organize and prioritize work
• Ability to maintain confidential information and abide by RID’s Code of Ethics
• Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Interpreting, completion of an interpreter training program, or equivalent amount of training and experience
• Certificate of Transliteration and/or Interpretation through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Quality Assurance Screening Level III through the VQAS testing system
• Some interpreting/transliterating experience in both individual and group situations
• Hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License and submit for review by DMV.
