Job Duties
The attorney will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to Virginia State University and to Richard Bland College, as well as other institutions of higher education on an as needed basis.
DUTIES: It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters serving all divisions of the assigned institutions. Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members. Counsel may also represent the institutions in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies and to third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. A minimum of five years’ experience in the general practice of law or the service of state agencies or institutions is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation of higher education institutions. This position will be based at the Office of the Attorney General in Richmond. Must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar, or be eligible for immediate admission. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
