Job Summary:

Enforce the state, local and federal laws; enforce college policies and procedures; and provide a variety of security and enforcement services that promotes and maintains a safe campus.

Job Duties:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Promote lawful behavior and protect the welfare of students, faculty, staff and visitors as a uniformed presence on campus. Perform foot and vehicle patrols to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, maintain order during events and enforce policies, laws and ordinances. Seeks solution to possible problem before event occurs. Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints. Respond to emergency calls and alarms and assists in determining the cause or origin of an emergency. Assist and/or direct securing an area and containing any emergency situation. Investigate criminal offenses, traffic accidents, injury reports, and various other reported situations and effectively document preliminary investigation reports. Make arrests and assist in the prosecution of violators of the law. Enforce traffic and parking regulations. Respond to routine calls for assistance including safety escorts, transport of money on and off the campus, and motorist assistance. Assist students, faculty, and other campus visitors with questions, directions, issuing temporary parking permits, opening and closing buildings and classrooms, and various other activities. Performs CPR, First Aid, and use AED equipment as needed. Reports unsafe conditions. Develop partnerships with the campus community and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse population. Operate law enforcement equipment (including lethal and non-lethal weapons necessary in the performance of required duties). Use of records management system, monthly reporting, college work order system, and other law enforcement related computer systems. May represent the department at college meetings or functions. May perform dispatch functions. Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be at least 21 years of age. Graduate of an accredited, approved police academy and be a certified police officer meeting all the requirements for P.O.S.T certification in Tennessee. Meet the requirements of TCA 38-8-106 and TCA 38-8-107 Qualifications of Police Officers. Out of state applicants are required to meet Tennessee P.O.S.T certification requirements within six (6) months of hire. Prior law enforcement experience as full-time certified officer must be within the past three (3) years. Must attend and successfully complete, annually, a department authorized and P.O.S.T approved in-service training course consisting of forty (40) hours of instruction. Must have not been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances. Possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license. Out of state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver’s license within thirty (30) days of hire. Have good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by the employing agency; and/or the POST Commission. Pass a medical examination including vision screening and drug testing. Pass a psychological evaluation. Must successfully complete the department field training program within designated time frame. Proficiency in firearms and non-lethal weapon operation.

Demonstrate problem solving skills. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action. Ability to ascertain facts by personal conduct, observation and the evaluation of records. Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information. Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in oftentimes stressful situations. Ability to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment. Ability to meet written department directives. Required to work any shift assigned- nights, weekends, holidays or a shift or location that best meets the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements: 

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; Ability to escalate physical exertion from minimum to maximum instantaneously when necessary to subdue/restrain individual. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/ or small parts, use of measuring devises, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.

Work Environment: 

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protection equipment. As with any position in law enforcement, conditions may be unsafe.

Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
