Title: Vice President of Academic Affairs

Job Summary

The Vice President of Academic Affairs reports to the President and serves as the chief academic officer of the college. The Vice President has primary responsibility for developing and implementing teaching and learning policy and program review and recommends changes focused on student success. The incumbent will provide vision, leadership, and overall administration for all credit courses and programs, academic support services, and off-campus centers. Critical components of this charge include ensuring accountability for student learning outcomes; encouraging and supervising academic innovation; overseeing faculty development initiatives; and leading in the strategic planning for, implementation of and continual review of all instructional programs.

Job Duties

  • Provide leadership, direction, and policy formation for the development and implementation of successful academic programs and services that are responsive to student, service area, and college needs. This includes program review and improvement, accreditation and self-evaluation, assessment of student learning, etc.
  • Oversee the operations of academic affairs and the operations of the campuses located in Jackson, Lexington, Savannah, and Trenton.
  • Provide leadership in fiscal management for the academic division, to include academic personnel decisions, budget development, and fiscal accountability.
  • Work collaboratively with staff at the Tennessee Board of Regents and administrators at JSCC in coordinating all academic policies, positions, assignments, academic offerings, academic calendars, and in initiating new programs.
  • Provide leadership for academic deans in assessing and responding to enrollment trends and issues, including implementation of strategies to improve student access, engagement, and success.
  • Support deans in the encouragement and improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Oversees processes that assess academic effectiveness, incorporates the principles and practices of curriculum development, evaluates student learning objectives, and improves student learning outcomes attainment.
  • Develop new academic programs that meet the current and emerging workforce needs.
  • Partner with TCAT and four-year institutions to develop and manage articulation agreements.
  • Supports alternative funding opportunities through effective grant development and attainment.
  • Actively participate in community-related organizations/associations.
  • Represent the President as needed.
  • Support the mission and values of the College.
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to assist the President in administrative leadership for the College.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate degree (or degree in progress) from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience in higher education
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative experiences in a leadership and/or senior leadership role in higher education
  • Three (3) years successful supervisory experience, including hiring and evaluating employees
  • Documented evidence of the following: leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to promote collegiality and build consensus; ability to promote and achieve a visionary set of goals for the college; ability to plan, direct, and evaluate a complex operation.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience at a multi-campus institution
  • Experience collaborating or engaging with industry, community, or government partners in connection with academic and/or workforce programming
  • An understanding and commitment to the open access policy and philosophy of the comprehensive community college
  • Experience with SACSCOC accreditation
  • Experience with academic program audits and specialized accreditation

Pay Rate:  $109,484 - $136,855 (Annual salary depending on eligible experience which is defined by the current compensation plan.)
