POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Dean of Academic Success is responsible for initiatives that promote, encourage, and support student academic success. This position provides leadership and direction in the creation, assessment, and coordination of retention and student success strategies. The Dean will have direct responsibility and oversight for developing, leading, implementing, and evaluating the strategic student success and retention plan. Planning will be informed and aligned with the mission, vision, core values and strategic goals of the College.

The Dean of Academic Success will manage the areas of Academic Advising, Achieving the Dream Program (ATD), and the Academic Success Center (ASC). The Dean will serve as a results-driven strategist and effective change agent working collaboratively across institutional departments to accomplish the strategic persistence, retention and graduation goals of the College.

MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Teaching Excellence

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with online program partners, staff, and faculty to coordinate and ensure seamless collaboration in advancing improvements in student retention.
  • Provide leadership and collaboration with college-wide efforts to eliminate attainment gaps for historically underserved and underrepresented student populations in accordance with Achieving the Dream strategies and best practices.

Holistic Student Support

  • Develop and lead a comprehensive strategic retention plan using best practices to promote persistence, retention, and completion.
  • Identify and recommend new or revised policies and procedures related to student retention and student success to meet persistence, retention, and graduation goals with the strategic plan.
  • Evaluate and create standard operating procedures for improved practices and communication to enhance academic support for students.
  • Provide collaborative leadership for college-wide data informed initiatives on the student experience, students learning and success, closing of opportunity gaps, and helping students thrive.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Affairs Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) personnel to ensure seamless communication between Academic and Student Affairs. 

Program Innovation

  • Work collaboratively with deans, faculty and student affairs personnel to develop effective summer programs to prepare students for their college experience.
  • Provide leadership for the academic student support teams in the development and implementation of success initiatives in academic advising, academic and academic support areas.

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Oversee budgets for Advising, the Academic Success Center, SIP Grant and Achieving the Dream.
  • Continued research and collaboration for procurement of outside funding to support the ASC.
  • Manage third party online academic advising and academic support partnerships and initiatives.

Organizational Culture

  • Provides professional leadership in recruiting staff, maintaining, and developing successful academic support activities for students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree: Required
  • Experience in higher education administration, particularly in the areas encompassed by this position, with demonstrated results in managing people, tasks, and or major projects.
  • Proven history of successful leadership ability in leading high performing teams to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Experience in the areas of retention, academic support, student success, and academic advising.
  • Evidence of leadership and creative accomplishments in establishing new programs, counseling students, and or working with educational leaders (academic administrators, student service professionals, and faculty).
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and high attention to details and accuracy are necessary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication as well as time management skills are essential to the success of the individual. 
  • Must be able to plan and organize the daily functions of a fast-paced office.
  • Proven skills in Microsoft Office Suite, and querying student information systems.
  • Maintain a cooperative, productive, and effective working relationship with staff, and sensitivity to and respect for the varied backgrounds of Chattanooga State’s students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and the community.

Salary Range: $83,867 - $104,834

* Pay will be determined based on experience and education in accordance with the salary guidelines of the Tennessee Board of Regents. To ensure consideration, all relevant work experience must be included in the application.*
