Position Title: Truck Driving Instructor, Full-Time

 

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Elizabethton is accepting applications for a full-time Truck Driving Instructor position at the Boones Creek Extension Campus. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma required
  • Valid commercial driver's license in Tennessee
  • Minimum of five years’ recent over-the-road driving experience with an exemplary record
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize and deliver theoretical and practical instruction to prepare students for CDL certification
  • Teaching experience preferred

 GENERAL DUTIES: 

The Truck Driving Instructor is responsible for teaching all aspects of the program, including:

  • Safety regulations, CDL regulations, and traffic laws
  • Road atlas navigation and highway route planning
  • Instruments and cab controls
  • Engine and air brake systems
  • Driving techniques for adverse weather conditions
  • Hazardous materials transportation
  • Clutch, gear, and transmission patterns
  • Coupling and uncoupling trailers
  • Obstacle course navigation and backing procedures
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Over-the-road driving experiences.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in development and purchasing for the truck driving program
  • Maintaining an active advisory committee
  • Regular communication with business and industry partners
  • Training and conducting third-party testing
  • Serving as a DOT examiner as required 
  • Administrative duties, including but not limited to curriculum development, student record-keeping, recruitment, graduate placement, and program budgeting
  • Participation in professional development and student organizations

SALARY: Commensurate with Tennessee College of Applied Technology salary guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Use of a computer
  • Normal standing, sitting, and walking
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stoop, stand and work, with or without accommodation to demonstrate and perform work-based projects
  • Operating a motor vehicle to travel within the college service area and beyond as needed.
