Job Summary

This is a temporary, part-time position reporting to the Executive Director of Library Services. The person in this position will work primarily at the Union and Macon Cove campuses but occasionally at other locations as well. The hours are primarily between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday with occasional Saturday mornings as well.

Job Duties

  • Works at the public services desk of an academic library
  • Greets and provides assistance in a courteous manner on the telephone and in-person
  • Provides circulation services and basic reference services
  • Assists librarians with projects and programs
  • Locates print and electronic resources from the library’s collection for patrons
  • Assists patrons with computers and office equipment
  • Provides directions and makes referrals to other College departments
  • Performs shelving and shelf reading to ensure items are in their proper order on the shelves
  • Searches for overdue and missing items
  • Maintains professional and technical skills by participating in staff development programs
  • Assists with the annual inventory of the collection
  • May perform other job duties and works at various locations as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working in or using an academic or public library
  • Degree from an accredited college/university, community/career college, or current university or college student

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite
  • Ability to search databases
  • Ability to read call numbers
  • Knowledge of basic filing, indexing, and cross reference methods.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and courteously verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to operate personal computer and basic office equipment.
  • Requires stooping, bending, stretching, pushing cartloads of books, supplies, etc. up to 40 lbs. and lifting up to 25 lbs. of books.
  • May require some travel within Shelby County to various campuses.
  • Must be able to work assigned hours at assigned locations.
