Job Title: Instructor of Biology

Job Grade: 907

Campus Location: Walters State Community College - Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The Natural Sciences Division offers biology courses for general biology (introductory and major’s level), anatomy and physiology, microbiology, ecology, conservation, and plant sciences. The faculty member will be expected to teach courses in all content areas where he/she is qualified.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide lecture/laboratory instruction for biology classes in accordance with the designated class format/delivery method. Assist with laboratory setup as needed. 
  • Prepare course syllabi and materials, evaluate student learning styles and outcomes, and maintain class records. 
  • Complete goals and objectives for the individual and division. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of supplemental course materials. 
  • Complete educational outcome measures and academic reporting as required. 
  • Provide career and course advising for pre-professional students. 
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies. 
  • Perform other divisional duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree with eighteen or more graduate semester hours in biology related content from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Graduate coursework in more than one of the following areas: general biology, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, ecology/conservation, botany/dendrology
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the community college.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (orally and in writing) with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the comprehensive community college philosophy.
  • A teaching philosophy that demonstrates adaptability for different learning styles, innovative methods of instruction, and a passion for teaching and working with students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned Doctorate.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in teaching biology lecture/laboratory courses at a college level.
  • Background in utilizing multimedia programs and distance learning.

Leadership & Supervisory: This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but is expected to participate as part of a team in conjunction with other faculty and as a member of the Natural Sciences division.

Environment & Working Conditions: Office environment is temperature controlled with occasional fluctuations, well lit, and free from loud noises and unnecessary interruptions. Could be exposed to varying weather conditions when travelling.

Physical Demands  (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):

  • Large amounts of time spent looking at computer monitors could lead to some eye strain, stress, or headache issues.
  • Operation of standard office equipment including copier and fax machine.
  • Repetitive stress injuries could occur.
  • Travel to local areas may be required.
