Function of the Job:
The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Shelbyville is accepting applications for a full-time Facilities Maintenance & Grounds Technician to support the Franklin County Extension Campus. Under the supervision of the Facilities Coordinator, this position performs routine custodial duties, basic building maintenance, and seasonal groundskeeping to ensure campus facilities and outdoor spaces are clean, safe, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.
This position requires traveling to a designated extension campus one day per week during the mowing season to perform landscaping and grounds maintenance duties.
Duties And Responsibilities:
- Ensure campus facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of common areas, including restrooms, drinking fountains, windows, floors, mats, sidewalks, and parking areas.
- Replenish restroom and sanitation supplies; empty and sanitize waste receptacles.
- Organize and maintain custodial and maintenance supply areas, including monitoring inventory and notifying the supervisor when replenishment is needed.
- Perform light HVAC maintenance, including filter replacement, minor repairs, and coil cleaning as needed.
- Perform basic plumbing repairs, including faucet repair, clearing minor drain clogs, caulking fixtures, and replacing plumbing components as needed.
- Perform basic electrical maintenance, including replacing light bulbs, fixtures, switches, and outlets.
- Conduct general carpentry and building maintenance, including drywall repair, painting, replacing ceiling tiles, baseboards, flooring tiles, blinds, hardware, doors, locks, and closers.
- Respond to and complete work orders for basic maintenance and repair requests in a timely manner.
- Assist with routine preventative maintenance tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual schedule as assigned.
- Move and assemble furniture and equipment; assist with classroom and event setup and breakdown.
- Perform routine and seasonal grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, debris removal, and weather-related tasks.
- Maintain sidewalks, entrances, and outdoor common areas to ensure safety and accessibility.
- Travel to an extension campus one day per week during mowing season to perform landscaping and groundskeeping duties.
- Assist the Facilities Coordinator with facility opening and closing procedures as assigned.
- Use tools, equipment, and cleaning chemicals safely and in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and applicable regulations.
- Interact professionally and courteously with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support campus operations.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (HiSET acceptable).
- Four (4) or more years of approved work experience in custodial services, facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, or a related field.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, SDS labeling requirements, and equipment used in routine sanitization of various surfaces.
- Ability to organize and manage supplies and complete multiple projects effectively.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and work order or similar software systems.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform basic first aid.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, problem-solving skills, and professionalism when interacting with students, faculty, staff, industry partners, and the public.
- Physical ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and perform all occupational duties, including prolonged standing and walking, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between campuses.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in facilities maintenance within a higher education or multi-site environment.
- Training or coursework in a skilled trade (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related field).
- Experience with preventative maintenance or work order systems.
- Experience operating commercial groundskeeping equipment.
