Job Title: Head Cross Country Coach 

Hiring Salary: $20,000.00 (Temporary Flat Rate Salary Part-time Position)

Institution: Walters State Community College - Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership, direction, and comprehensive oversight for the Walters State men’s and women’s cross country and track club programs. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of program operations and student-athlete development, including but not limited to recruitment and retention of student-athletes, practice planning and implementation, meet preparation and supervision, performance data collection and analysis, academic progress monitoring, team travel coordination for away competitions, compliance with institutional policies and procedures, and the execution of all administrative responsibilities associated with serving as head coach. Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide comprehensive leadership for student-athlete development by planning, organizing, and supervising practices; preparing for and managing competitions; fostering skill development and athletic performance; monitoring academic progress and eligibility; promoting knowledge of injury prevention, wellness, and appropriate treatment protocols; and maintaining accurate performance statistics, training data, and program records. 
  • Perform all administrative functions associated with program operations, including timely completion of travel documentation, effective budget planning and fiscal management, maintenance of required reports and records, and ensuring full compliance with institutional policies, conference regulations, and NJCAA bylaws and standards.
  • May perform other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

  • An associate’s degree in related field.
  • Working knowledge gained from experience running a successful cross country program.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to persuade prospective athletes to attend WSCC.
  • Two or more years of coaching cross country at a high school or higher level.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of NJCAA, TCCAA, and appropriate TN Board of Regents’ policies and procedures.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to operate state vehicle.

Leadership & Supervisory: The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and management of the performance of student athletes on the cross country team. The employee in this position can perform most tasks without consulting others, though resources, guidelines, and a direct supervisor are available for consultation if necessary. Work is checked largely for progress towards the completion of objectives.

Environment & Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed without supervision on cross country and track courses. Due to the nature of the position, exposure to heat, cold, humidity, noise, and temperature changes are possible.
  • Bodily injury could occur, including damage from physical activity due to the nature of the position.

Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):

  • Hours can vary depending on the scope and nature of an event, such as meets at distant locations.
  • Working on weekends can occur based on event schedules.
