Job Summary

The Head Softball Coach / Student Success Coach is a dual-capacity position combining leadership of the women's softball program with a campus-wide academic coaching role supporting the College's broader student success and completion initiatives.

As Head Softball Coach, this position is responsible for the leadership, development, and administration of the women's softball program, including competitive performance, recruitment, and NJCAA compliance, while also supporting the academic success of student-athletes on the softball roster in accordance with the Athletics Academic Success Plan (AD-SOP-4).

This function reports to the Director of Athletics & Academic Success.
Coaches are expected to contribute to department wide retention, persistence, completion, and academic performance goals through proactive coaching, intervention, and student engagement practices.

Job Duties

  • Head Softball Coach — Academic Accountability
    • Monitor academic progress, GPA, credit completion, and retention status for student-athletes on the softball roster each term
    • Enforce mandatory study hall attendance requirements for the softball roster in accordance with the Athletics Academic Success Plan (AD-SOP-4)
    • Support and participate in the academic intervention process for softball student-athletes triggered by GPA below 2.8 or recorded D/F grades, including escalation procedures outlined in AD-SOP-4
    • Submit the Monthly Academic Report to the Director of Athletics & Academic Success by the 3rd business day of each month using the approved department template
    • Partner with advising, tutoring, and student success teams to support early alerts, academic interventions, and structured study expectations for softball student athletes
  • Coaching & Program Development
    • Plan, organize, and conduct all practices and competitions
    • Develop student-athletes' athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship
    • Create a competitive schedule in alignment with NJCAA guidelines
    • Promote a culture of discipline, accountability, and excellence
  • Recruitment & Enrollment Alignment
    • Actively recruiting prospective student-athletes aligned with institutional enrollment goals
    • Collaborate with Admissions and Recruitment to:
      • Support application completion
      • Ensure timely document submission (transcripts, eligibility)
      • Assist with yield strategies
    • Maintain a recruiting pipeline that supports roster sustainability and enrollment growth
    • Represent the College at showcases, high school visits, and community events
    • Use of athletics recruiting data to support institutional enrollment forecasting
  • NJCAA Compliance & Eligibility
    • Ensure full compliance with all NJCAA, institutional, and conference regulations
    • Maintain accurate eligibility documentation and roster certification
    • Work with the Athletics Operations/Compliance Coordinator on:
      • Eligibility tracking
      • Documentation submission
      • Audit readiness
    • Complete all required compliance training and reporting
  • Student Engagement & Holistic Development
    • Foster a sense of belonging and engagement among student-athletes
    • Support life skills development, leadership, and personal growth
    • Encourage participation in campus activities and student life
    • Serve as a mentor and role model
  • Student Success Coach Responsibilities
    • Monitor academic progress, GPA, credit completion, and retention status for student athletes each term
    • Conduct regular coaching and advising sessions to support student goal setting, persistence, and completion
    • Identify and respond to early alerts, coordinating timely interventions for at-risk students
    • Connect students with appropriate campus resources, including tutoring, advising, financial aid, and counseling services
    • Document caseload interactions and submit required reports to the Athletic Director
    • Collaborate with college-wide retention and completion initiatives
  • Operations & Administrative Duties
    • Manage program budget in coordination with Athletics leadership
    • Oversee equipment, travel, and scheduling logistics
    • Maintain accurate records and reports
    • Assist with game-day operations as needed
    • Complete all training and reporting requested by the Director of Athletics & Academic Success or the Office of Student Success & Completion
    • Balance of time and priorities effectively between Head Softball Coach duties and Student Success Coach responsibilities
  • Collaboration Across the Institution
    • Work closely with:

      • Admissions
      • Academic Affairs
      • Office of Student Success & Completion
    • Support cross-functional initiatives that impact student success, retention, and enrollment
    • Participate in departmental and institutional meetings
  • Perform other duties related to the Head Softball and Student Success Coach roles as assigned by the Director of Athletics & Academic Success

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree
  • Previous coaching experience (high school, travel, or collegiate level)
  • Understanding of NJCAA rules and eligibility standards (or willingness to learn)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience at the collegiate level (NJCAA preferred)
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and roster management
  • Experience supporting student success, academic coaching, or retention initiatives (athletic or general student population)
  • Background in academic advising, academic coaching, or student success services
  • Familiarity with early alert systems, case management, or retention strategies
  • Familiarity with community college student populations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of softball fundamentals and player development
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to support student academic success, advising, or retention initiatives for the general student population

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

  • Requires evening, weekend, and travel commitments
  • Active engagement in both athletic and academic environments
  • High visibility role representing the College in the community
  • Requires effectively managing time and responsibilities across two reporting lines and two distinct caseloads
