Position Summary

The ESOL Coordinator provides direct academic assistance to students, designs learning resources and interventions for Supplemental Instruction, and supports English language learners (ELLs) in their transition to college-level coursework. This position combines tutoring, instructional design, and classroom teaching to promote student success in integrated reading and writing courses for multilingual learners.

The successful candidate will teach Learning Support Reading and Writing for ESOL students, collaborate with faculty to enhance learning outcomes, and develop SI sessions and instructional materials aligned with course objectives. The position reports to the Director of ESL Services and works closely with Learning Support faculty, tutors, and academic support staff across the college to ensure equitable, effective learning experiences for all students.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction and Student Support

  • Teach Learning Support Reading and Writing courses designed for ESOL students.
  • Provide individualized and small-group academic support to multilingual learners.
  • Design and facilitate Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions that reinforce classroom instruction, integrate study strategies, and address reading and writing skill development.
  • Develop customized learning plans that strengthen English proficiency and academic confidence.
  • Foster inclusive, student-centered learning environments that reflect best practices in adult education and second language acquisition.

Instructional Design and Resource Development

  • Create and adapt instructional materials, online modules, and learning interventions to support SI and ESL learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to design cohesive, accessible learning materials for diverse learners.
  • Integrate technology, active learning strategies, and assessment data to improve engagement and retention.
  • Maintain and disseminate ESL and Learning Support resources that align with institutional learning goals.

Tutoring and Academic Coaching

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in reading, writing, and study strategies for ESL and Learning Support students.
  • Coordinate with peer tutors and SI leaders to ensure alignment with course objectives and consistent academic support.
  • Track and document student progress, attendance, and learning outcomes to inform instructional improvements.

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Collaborate with English and Learning Support faculty, tutoring staff, and student success programs to enhance academic support for ESL learners.
  • Participate in professional development focused on ESL pedagogy, instructional design, and SI methodologies.
  • Contribute to departmental planning, assessment, and reporting related to ESL program development and student success.
  • Support grant-funded initiatives that strengthen retention and transition pathways for multilingual learners.
Minimum Qualifications
  • TESOL/ESL certificate, endorsement, or equivalent credential.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, TESOL, Journalism, Communications, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, tutoring, or providing academic support to multilingual learners.
  • Experience developing instructional or online learning materials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with college-level writing instruction and learning management systems (e.g., D2L, Canvas, Blackboard).
  • Commitment to inclusive, student-centered education and cultural responsiveness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, English, Applied Linguistics, Education, or related field.
  • Experience teaching Learning Support or Developmental English courses at the community college level.
  • Experience designing or coordinating Supplemental Instruction (SI) or similar academic support programs.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Experience in instructional design or curriculum development.
  • Familiarity with data-informed assessment and continuous program improvement.
Working Conditions and Expectations
  • This position includes both classroom instruction and direct academic support duties.
  • Some evening or weekend hours may be required to meet student needs.
  • Participation in college-wide student success initiatives and professional development is expected.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.

Salary Range: $44,377 - $55,472
