Brief Job Overview/Summary
The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Global Engagement and provide support for international degree-seeking and exchange students and scholars. The Assistant Director is a key member of the Office of Global Engagement team, and, under the supervision of the Director, serves as PDSO (Primary Designated School Official) and RO (Responsible Officer) in SEVIS. The Assistant Director ensures compliance with federal immigration laws and policies, coordinates campus services to assist international students and scholars, organizes programming to enrich the experience of international students and scholars, and assists with program assessment and strategic planning for OGE. This position will collaborate with OGE colleagues to support the office’s mission to “provide the Stockton University community with opportunities for global engagement that foster intercultural understanding, ethical and inclusive practices, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives.”
Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Serve as a resource for faculty members and academic advisors who work with international students and scholars
Follow updates and changes in the curriculum in order to have a deep understanding of the curricular needs of international students
Respond in a timely and culturally appropriate manner to communications from international partners, and coordinate with the Assistant Director of Education Abroad to support balanced international exchanges
Advise the Director on strategic growth in international exchanges
Organize events for visiting international delegations both on and off campus, demonstrating an understanding of intercultural norms and expectations
Ensure compliance and reporting as relates to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Department of State (DOS)
Keep up to date on changes in national laws and policies pertaining to non-immigrant visas, participate in regular training, and engage with others in the field of ISSS through engagement with NAFSA events and networks
Advise non-immigrant students, scholars, faculty, and dependents on visa requirements, cultural adjustment, and authorized employment
Collaborate routinely with the Office of Risk Management to develop, review, and update procedures and policies, and respond swiftly and appropriately to emergency situations
Create and deliver workshops on topics of importance and interest to international students and scholars. Design a calendar of educational events for ISSS
Design, develop, and maintain a Blackboard course of instruction for pre-arrival orientation and to support ongoing learning about visa regulations, OPT, CPT, and other issues that pertain to international students Coordinate with the International Student Organization and other student organizations to organize curricular and co-curricular programming
Data collection, Assessment, and Planning
Participate in the development and update of OGE strategic planning, developing and promoting plans to improve the program
Prepare, recommend, monitor, and revise ISSS budget
Student support
Maintain a caseload of F-1 and J-1 students and scholars, anticipating and responding to needs through collaboration with relevant campus offices
Coordinate with Admissions and with exchange partner institutions to ensure a smooth transition for new students to the university
Organize a pre-arrival and post-arrival orientation, in collaboration with other office staff and campus partners
Respond with compassion and discretion when unexpected situations arise, communicating and collaborating with the Director
Protect students’ privacy, following all FERPA, HIPAA, Title IV, and GDPR
Supervise and manage student leaders, peer mentors, interns, graduate assistants, and TES
Collaborate with the Director and other permanent OGE staff to provide training for TES, graduate assistants, interns, and student workers
Prepare correspondence in the course of duties
Additional responsibilities include:
Promote the OGE and support marketing to international students through maintaining, enhancing, and updating the OGE website; contributing to the OGE social media postings; and collaborating with Admissions to provide virtual and in-person events for prospective international students
Contributes to the growth of OGE by researching new programs and projects and serving on university-wide committees
Serve on campus committees
Provide administrative support to the Director
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience collecting and using data to inform planning and program development
Extensive experience working with Microsoft Office
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, particularly in an intercultural setting
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with diverse groups in a college or university setting
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
Ability to develop a communication strategy and maintain good relations with international partners
Knowledge and understanding of management and administrative principles and practices, especially as relates to international students and scholars
Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to work independently and interact effectively with others in all roles and at all levels at the University
Understanding of best teaching practices and experience designing and leading training and workshops
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
A minimum of two years of experience in ISSS at an institution of higher learning, and/or a related field working directly with faculty, students and staff in a university setting
Experience in SEVIS as a DSO/ARO
A valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in a related field
Strong communication skills in one or more languages in addition to English
Experience in Web design
Ability to develop, administer, and monitor a budget
Experience working or studying in an international setting
Experience in administration and project management at a college/university setting
Strong knowledge of risk assessment and crisis management
Discretion with sensitive and personal information, and an understanding of FERPA/HIPAA, Clery, and Title IX
