Brief Job Overview/Summary
In a large state building complex in a state department or agency, assists with supervision of housekeeping, inspection, and the general order, cleanliness, safety, and sanitation of assigned units; does related work as required.
Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Organizes the housekeeping, service, and other supervisory work assigned, and develops effective work methods • Conducts a perpetual inventory of linens, laundry, and other household items, and inspects these to determine the quality and efficiency of the laundry work and their condition, and lists items for repair or replacement • Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of • Subordinates • Assists in planning and carrying out the general housekeeping, maintenance, and inspection of assigned wards and other units • Gives instructions to the housekeeping department and other employees assigned to the units concerned and supervise their work • Sees that standards of care and service are maintained within designated areas • Supervises laundry and linen exchanges and other assigned units; oversees the upholstery and mattress shops, the sewing rooms, and the tailor shop; supervises the movement of furniture and supplies Assists in requisitioning, recording, issuing, and supervising the proper use and care of institution equipment and materials • Sees that worn out and useless articles which cannot be salvaged, including clothing are discarded and condemned • Make inspections and see that areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition • Make reports orally and in writing • Acts in the place of the supervisor in his or her absence; assists in training new employees • Maintains records and files • In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire training classes • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of large scale housekeeping problems, methods, procedures, equipment, and routines, and their application to specific situations • Knowledge of the methods used in inspecting wards and other areas from the point of view of housekeeping maintenance standards and general order, safety, and sanitation • Knowledge of modern methods, procedures, and equipment used in sewing, marking, and mending clothing and linens • Knowledge of the procedures used in operating large-scale linen rooms • Knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures, and equipment involved in large scale laundry operations • Ability to organize assigned supervisory housekeeping duties and develop effective work methods Ability to provide advice and assistance to staff regarding clothing and linen requirements and distribution • Ability to plan and supervise the work of assigned employees • Ability to requisition and supervise the proper use, recording, and care of equipment, materials, and supplies • Ability to supervise the maintenance of necessary housekeeping service records and files • Ability to make reports either orally or in writing • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. Required Qualifications:
• Two (2) years of large scale general housekeeping experience • One (1) year of supervisory experience in work connected with housekeeping, sanitation, and maintenance services • A valid New Jersey driver’s license
