About the Department:

The Department of Biology offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Biology, and a B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science. Our faculty are involved in graduate programs such as the M.S. in Biology, the M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, the Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy, and the Ph.D. in Biosciences. We offer a broad curriculum with concentrations available in: A) Biopsychology; B) Biotechnology and Molecular Biology; C) Environmental and Conservation Biology; D) Microbiology; and E) Bioinformatics. The bachelor’s degree programs in Biology provide a sound liberal arts education with substantial experience in quantitative and analytical thought, along with preparation for a related profession.

About the Position:

The Laboratory Technician – Anatomy & Physiology is responsible for the necessary preparative work for designated biology laboratory courses, primarily Anatomy and Physiology Biology in Exploratory Hall (EXPL). Specifically, the position is in charge of EXPL 2504, 2505 and 2506 as well as maintenance and inventory of supplies and equipment in those laboratory rooms. The position works with faculty course coordinators and is responsible for ordering supplies and equipment as needed; works cooperatively with other staff members and Graduate Teaching Assistants, as well as with other laboratory course technicians in the Biology Department as needed; attends any prep sessions organized by the course coordinators; is responsible for working with the Environmental Health and Safety office to coordinate laboratory waste management and other safety protocols, and must stay up-to-date on their annual safety certifications; must assist with annual equipment inventory; and, be responsible for adjusting to changing conditions and optimizing laboratory protocols. The position may also be expected to attend and participate in departmental meetings (if and when it does not interfere with attending to laboratory needs).

Responsibilities:

Lab Preparation

  • Prepares labs, ensuring lab materials are prepared correctly and in advance of labs using high attention to detail.

Lab Clean up

  • Breaks down and cleans up the labs when finished in a timely manner.

Lab Supplies

  • Manages supply orders allowing sufficient time for delivery before the supplies are needed.

Maintaining Lab Equipment

  • Ensures that equipment is working and in good repair.;
  • Works with lab coordinate to repair equipment as needed;
  • Maintains prep rooms in a clean an orderly manner; and
  • Works with Mason’s Environmental Health and Safety Office to ensure compliance with required safety standard.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with laboratory preparation; 
  • Good interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to learn new laboratory techniques;
  • Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry;
  • Knowledge of basic Anatomy & Physiology;
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures;
  • Ability to interpret laboratory procedures;
  • Ability to interact with students, staff and faculty;
  • Knowledge concerning the operation of pertinent laboratory equipment;
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/.  The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon favorable review; and
  • Laboratory Safety Certification (annual) -  can be obtained within 60 days of starting in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience prepping in a university instructional laboratory setting.
