About the Department:

The Graduate Division, part of the Office of the Provost under Academic Affairs, elevates Mason graduate education by augmenting the work of the academic units, increasing the impact of graduate students and programs, fostering a collaborative culture of academic excellence, and contributing to the research productivity and the workforce development appropriate to an R1 institution.

About the Position:

This Assistant Provost for Graduate Academic Affairs will provide leadership, strategic direction, and advocacy in all matters related to graduate academic affairs across George Mason, including university and graduate academic policies, community engagement, academic program evaluation (master’s, specialist, doctoral, graduate certificates, and pathways), and educational innovation. Additional assignment is for a three-year period commitment.

Responsibilities:

  • Help guide the Graduate Division in meeting the graduate education-related goals of the university’s strategic plan by leading and supporting aligned academic affairs initiatives;
  • Assist the Senior Associate Provost for Graduate Education in crafting the strategic direction for graduate academic affairs in collaboration with other university stakeholders;
  • Serve as liaison to the Associate Deans of Graduate Affairs and Associate Deans of Research, or equivalent;
  • Strategically engage and communicate with graduate faculty across units about graduate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with institutional standards, external requirements, and graduate academic expectations;
  • Represent the Graduate Division and be an advocate for adoption of best practices that improve the graduate academic journey, as encapsulated in new or enhanced policies, and for communication and education regarding related, streamlined procedures and workflows;
  • Participate in the management and review of proposed curriculum for the Graduate Council and lead implementation of enhancements to the overall graduate program lifecycle;
  • Promote collaboration and encourage the development of interdisciplinary curriculum and teaching across academic units;
  • Increase recognition of the Graduate Division’s academic affairs offerings to academic units and the George Mason community at large through engagement and participation in university committees; and
  • Lead, supervise, and support the work of Graduate Division Academic Affairs staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • PH.D or other terminal degree;
  • Required rank of Tenured Associate Professor or (Full) Professor;
  • Excellent written and oral communication;
  • Expert in collaboration and relationship building; and
  • Knowledge of best practices in graduate education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic leadership experience as a graduate program director, chair, or associate/assistant dean, or related position; and
  • Supervision experience.
