About the Department:
The Department of Health Administration and Policy educates students and conducts research in health systems management, health policy and health informatics. The department fields academic programs in Health Administration/Healthcare Management and Health Informatics at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels to prepare new leaders and experts in the use of technology, evidence-based decision making and health systems management to improve public health and the quality of healthcare.
About the Position:
The Part-Time (30 hours/week) Term Faculty member to coordinates the Capstone Internship Course Sequence within the CAHIIM-accredited BS in Health Informatics program. This role involves teaching, student mentoring, and coordination of internship experiences across a two-course sequence, beginning with a pre-internship preparation course and continuing through the supervised internship experience.
Responsibilities:
Teaching, Curriculum Delivery, and Service
Delivers instruction in the pre-internship preparation course, focusing on readiness for professional practice, resume and cover letter development, interview techniques, and goal setting aligned with program competencies;
Guides students through the internship experience by monitoring progress, assessing student learning, and providing feedback on required deliverables;
Promotes integration of classroom knowledge with real-world informatics practice; and
Serves on Department, CPH and University level faculty committees and working groups.
Student Support and Placement
Advises and coaches students on securing internship placements that align with their career goals and skill levels;
Facilitates matching of students to appropriate internship opportunities and oversee administrative aspects of placement; and
Provides continuous student support throughout the internship, serving as a point of contact for problem-solving and reflection.
Program Coordination and Evaluation
Maintains accurate records of internship sites, preceptors, student placements, and evaluation outcomes;
Collaborates with program faculty and administrators to assess internship quality and implement improvements based on feedback from students and preceptors; and
Contributes to CAHIIM accreditation efforts by documenting student internship outcomes and supporting required reporting.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Health Informatics, Information Systems, Public Health, Health Administration, or a related discipline;
Professional experience in health informatics or a related field;
Experience teaching or mentoring in higher education, preferably in health informatics or applied health sciences;
Comprehensive knowledge of health informatics concepts, technologies, and applications across healthcare settings;
Knowledge of curriculum development and effective teaching strategies for adult learners;
Understanding of experiential learning practices, internship development, and professional preparation for students;
Strong instructional skills, including experience teaching professional preparation and internship-related courses;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and external partners;
Relationship-building skills to establish and maintain internship site partnerships and preceptor networks;
Student advising and coaching skills, particularly in preparing students for internship experiences and professional careers; and
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional partnerships with healthcare or health IT organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal degree in a related field;
Familiarity with CAHIIM accreditation standards and the role of internships in competency-based education;
Familiarity with CAHIIM accreditation standards and competency-based education models in health informatics;
Awareness of healthcare delivery systems, public health organizations, and health IT industry environments;
High level of organizational skills to manage multiple internship placements, evaluations, and administrative tasks simultaneously;
Skilled in problem-solving and conflict resolution to support students and internship sites when challenges arise; and
Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) and internship tracking platforms.
