About the Department:

The George Mason University Writing Center provides writing support for undergraduate and graduate students from majors across the university. Services include individual writing consultations in face-to-face and online formats, enrollment tutoring for multilingual writers, workshops, graduate student writing groups, and print and online resources. The Writing Center holds 7000 – 8000 individual appointments/year, provides 100+ outreach events, and trains and mentors a staff of 40 - 50 undergraduate and graduate student tutors and administrators each year. The Writing Center conducts programs in partnership with University Libraries, Writing Across the Curriculum, Students as Scholars, INTO Mason, the Office of Academic Integrity, Graduate Student Life, and the Office of Disability Services, among others.

About the Position:

The ESOL Specialist supports the growing population of international and domestic ESOL writers at George Mason University by offering individualized instruction to ESOL writers, administering the ESOL tutoring program, training the tutoring staff to work with ESOL writers, and developing workshops and writing groups for ESOL students.

Responsibilities:

  • Tutors advanced multilingual undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Collaborates in training and mentoring a staff of 40-45 writing tutors to work with multilingual writers, to include:
    • Leading modules and workshops on working with multilingual writers;
    • Delivering a program of ongoing professional development, targeted at working with multilingual writers;
    • Conducting consultant observations; and
    • Mentoring consultants who work with multilingual writers.
  • Coordinates, leads, and assesses writing groups for graduate multilingual students.
  • Administers and assesses the Center's Opt-In Program, which pairs multilingual writers with consultants for regular, weekly appointments.
  • Creates instructional resources for tutors and multilingual writers.
  • Collaborates with university partners on special projects.
  • Holds administrative hours in the Writing Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • ESL teaching or writing center tutoring experience at the college level or equivalent; and
  • Evidence of leadership and organizational skills and a collaborative approach to working with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in TESOL, Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field;
  • Experience teaching English for academic purposes;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for L2 writers;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for instructors or tutors of L2 writers;
  • Experience teaching or tutoring L2 graduate student writers;
  • Knowledge of multilingual writing tutoring pedagogy and scholarship; and
  • Evidence of effective mentoring of student employees.
