Job Summary/Basic Function:
Standardized patients (SP) are actors who use scripted scenarios to give health professions students a standardized, live patient experience. SPs for NURS 212 will work 4-6 hours/week, 8 weeks of the semester, approximately 32-40 hours for the semester. Typical hours will be on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 9am-12pm.
Description of duties:
1. SPs will work 4-6 hours each week they are needed in NURS 212 lab, approximately 8 weeks during the semester.
2. SPs will be given a script and scenario to be reviewed before the lab. Memorization is encouraged but not required. No personal health information will be asked of SPs.
3. SPs will be asked to change into a hospital gown, removing socks. Undergarments (bra, underwear) will not be removed. No breast, genital, or rectal exams will be conducted on SPs.
4. Along with typical head and arms/legs exams, nursing students would: listen to heart sounds on the front chest; listen to breath sounds on front, side, and back of chest; inspect and palpate the abdomen above the waistline; inspect and feel the back; and inspect and feel legs and bare feet. Listening to heart and lung sounds are all done without exposing the anterior chest or breasts.
