Purpose of Position

This position will work with the department to provide marketing, event and communication support for the chair and faculty in meeting the teaching, research, and service goals of the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Marketing and Graphic Design
    • Work on a variety of graphic design projects, including digital bulletin boards, electronic media, posters, flyers, event programs, recruitment pieces, and other design projects for the Department of Chemistry.
    • Work with various multimedia outlets to promote the Department of Chemistry Work in cooperation with students, faculty, and staff to support departmental activities and events through various communication channels.
    • Photograph events for use on social media and other publications.
    • Research and stay current with new social media and marketing trends. Work in coordination with the College Director of Alumni and External Relations.
    • Plan and distribute annual department newsletter for print and digital distribution. Update physical displays in Abbott Hall.
    • Select, order, and manage inventory for and use of promotional items and materials in accordance with institutional policies and needs of the department. 
  •  Event Assistance 
    • Manage event teams by coordinating with vendors and campus partners to develop, manage, and follow event timelines, contracts, systems, and processes which include an extensive seminar series.
    • Execute the needs of events, which includes but is not limited to: creation and distribution of invitations, monitoring RSVP’s, procurement of room reservations, coordination of catering needs, ordering supplies and audiovisual equipment, parking arrangements, venue layouts, and décor.
    • Develop detailed project plans for events, including timelines, budgets, and resources.
    • Oversee registrations, and initiate attendee contact as required.
    • Lead project meetings with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and clear communication.
    • Evaluate events and gather feedback to expand, develop, and improve future events.
    • Provide assistance and support for research and teaching events.
    • Support projects with plan development and execution, when required, with the department outreach coordinator.
  • Social Media Manager 
    • Build and Maintain the Department of Chemistry’s social media presence.
    • Develop and produce relevant content and social media campaigns for the Department of Chemistry.
    • Ensure all platforms are updated and maintained consistently and appropriately.
    • Interact with prospective students, alumni, and other stakeholders via the department’s social media accounts.
  • Communications Support for Department  
    • Keep front office welcoming; greet visitors including students and the public.
    • Coordinate and reserve rooms for academic and research-driven events.
    • Distribute and file ACS exams with a secure procedure.
    • Communicate with facilities and submit work orders and project requests as needs arise in the department.
    • Inform students of internships, research, and employment opportunities and scholarships.
    • Welcome prospective undergraduate students with print and email communications.
    • Build and maintain communications and relationships with alumni and donors.
    • Manage alumni database.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five or more years work experience in a scientific academic setting
  • Five or more years demonstrated experience with management and content creation of social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).
  • Adobe in Design Certification
  • Demonstrated experience with graphic design
  • Experience with designing event & outreach campaign materials
  • Proficiency with Microsoft word, Excel, Publisher and Outlook
  • Experience with UND Marketplace system
  • Experience with Omni Update
  • Completed UND Brand standards and best practices training
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
