- $50,000+ annual, Dependent on Experience, Exempt
- 40 during academic year and 20 during summer hours per week
- This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.
Purpose of Position
To assist the clinician in (1) confirming or rejecting a diagnosis, (2) providing guidelines in patient management, (3) establishing a prognosis, (4) detecting disease through case findings or screening and (5) monitoring follow up therapy. Satisfaction in laboratory performance is attained through quality assessment, which mandates maximum contributions to benefit patients and assist health care providers in an effective, efficient and economic manner. The MLS/MLT works closely with other laboratory staff and care givers as a team member, adheres to professional standards, works efficiently and productively, assists other laboratory staff with tasks as needed and supports the department’s and organization’s mission, values and goals. Perform and document quality control, quality assessment, and instrumentation and test procedures. Maintain technical direction and quality and timely testing for a “moderately complex” laboratory, so as to facilitate the evaluation of the patient. Perform specimen collection
Duties & Responsibilities
- 80% - Collection and performance of laboratory tests for a moderately complex laboratory.
- Confirm patient using two identifiers.
- Explain and instruct patient on the collection of specimens.
- Perform specimen collection, analysis, and interpretation of diagnostic testing.
- Recognize acceptable and unacceptable samples, while processing specimens for analysis.
- Perform and report waived and moderately complex testing according to standard operating procedures.
- Complete testing within the designated turnaround time.
- Correlate lab results with patient information and clinical states.
- Laboratory testing includes Chemistry, Urinalysis (Chemical and Microscopic analysis), Serology, Hematology, and Molecular testing.
- Follow Laboratory Standard Operating procedures for keeping all laboratory documentation.
- Process all Laboratory referral specimens appropriately.
- Maintain appropriate logs and documentation of specimens and results.
- 5% - Provide collaboration and communication with medical providers.
- Provide consultation with medical staff regarding correlation of pathological symptoms and laboratory testing to aid in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific problems. Exercise initiative and independent judgment regarding support to medical staff.
- Recognize appropriate test selection, validity of test results, deviations of and causes of discrepant test results, and need for additional testing.
- Communicate critical/urgent values to appropriate provider.
- 10% - Quality assessment, quality control, instrumentation, and proficiency testing. Tasks involved in fulfilling the above duties/responsibilities
- Perform Quality Control testing and maintenance procedures to ensure reliability and accuracy of testing results. Identify, interpret, and troubleshoot out of range test results. Implement corrective action and documentation when necessary.
- Operate and perform quality assessment on LIS and Electronic Medical Records.
- Document all repairs, maintenance, quality control, Calibrations, and quality assessment results.
- Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain equipment and instruments.
- Verify accuracy of all instrumentation using established procedures and quality control testing.
- Perform proficiency testing.
- Maintain current knowledge of standards to maintain the laboratory’s accreditation
- 5% - Other duties as assigned.
- Always maintain a high level of professionalism and uphold patient confidentiality as per FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
- Participate in opportunities clinic and campus wide, to enhance the educational experience and success of UND students.
- Community involvement.
- Within professional scope of practice, perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of Student Health Services and the UND community.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science
- Licensure: Must be licensed by the North Dakota Board of Medical Laboratory Practice as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician or have the appropriate education to become licensed within one year of employment per a Provisional Permit
- Certification: Must hold current national certification through ASCP or NCA as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician or have the appropriate education to become licensed within one year of employment per a Provisional Permit
- Current or ability to obtain CPR certification within 30 days of hire
- Experience with computers
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Phlebotomy experience
- 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Laboratory Interface Systems (LIS)
- Experience with health care needs of the college population
