Purpose of Position

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Programs and has direct responsibilities for coordinating the administration, supervision, and safe operation of the comprehensive campus recreation & sports program including but not limited to recreational intramural sports (ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, etc.), and other recreational programs. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to delivering excellent service, ensuring appropriate staff coverage and management of assigned areas, leading/officiating programs, and supervision (hire, train, develop, and review) of 40-50 assigned part-time employees. The campus recreation program, with over 3,000 participants annually, supports student recruitment, retention, success, and well-being.

Duties & Responsibilities

Plan and administer a diversified Intramural Rec Sports program that meets the needs of the campus community.

  • Understand the intra-competitive recreation sport needs of the campus community and implement new and creative programs that are in line with needs.
  • Evaluate the Intramurals program on a regular basis, making programmatic and other adjustments as appropriate and maintaining a system of record keeping.
  • Program, coordinate, schedule, and monitor intramural sports for students, faculty and staff.
  • Assist with promotion and marketing, including the maintenance of on-line registration processes.
  • Secure necessary activity space and direct and assist with physical set up for Intramural, Recreation, & Camp activities.

Plan, administer, and support Campus Recreation programs/activities that meet the needs of the campus community.

  • Understand the recreational sport needs of the campus community and implement new and creative programs and support as needed.
  • Manage associated facilities/spaces utilized for program needs.
  • Evaluate programs on a regular basis, making programmatic and other adjustments as appropriate.
  • Program, coordinate, schedule, and monitor campus recreation for students, faculty and staff.

Plan and administer a Summer Recreation/Wellness Camp 

  • Plan, administer and develop summer recreational/wellness camp programs.
  • Develop and implement training for camp staff, ensuring that safety protocols and operating procedures are articulated clearly and implemented effectively.
  • Evaluate program on a regular basis, making programmatic and other adjustments as appropriate.
  • Program, coordinate, schedule, and monitor camps for effectiveness.
  • Ensure revenue growth and sustain margins needed to expand and ensure quality programs.

Fiscal Management

  • Develop and manage annual budgets for all assigned operational/program areas.
  • Ensure good stewardship of finances by monitoring expenses and purchases.
  • Abide by all required department and University purchasing policies and procedures.

Administration, Leadership, Customer Service and Teamwork

  • Be familiar with, communicate, and apply all department/division/institutional policies and procedures.

Staff Supervision

  • Hire, train, schedule and evaluate all assigned student staff positions.
  • Develop and update training manuals to ensure that employees are knowledgeable of the Wellness Center and area-specific policies and procedures before scheduling them to work.
  • Meet with staff monthly or as needed to ensure excellent communication and training.
  • As needed, work with Program Manager(s) to evaluate staff in respective areas using Job Performance Appraisals and Behavior Logs.
  • Establish and maintain an up-to-date, continuous training and education plan for all assigned student staff.
  • Process payroll and leave requests for all assigned staff in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assist with implementation of department processes related to student staff development, recruitment, interviewing and selection, orientation, training, evaluation, reward, and recognition programs.
  • Provide effective leadership, management, mentoring, and empowerment for all personnel.
  • Ensure staff interact and model department team values.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree: Exercise Science, Physical Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or related field
  • One year of demonstrated experience and successful programming in recreation and/or sports intramurals.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Certification of First Aid, CPR, and AED or be able to obtain within 2 months of hire.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree: Exercise Science, Physical Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or related field
  • Experience with supervision of student staff in a collegiate or university setting
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Experience with officiating high school level sports or higher
  • Experience with and understanding ice hockey rules and regulations (high school or higher)
  • Experience with esports programs
