Salary/Position Classification

  • $40,000 to $45,000 Annual, Dependent on Experience, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 40 hours per week
  • 100% Remote Work Availability: No

Purpose of Position

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Safety Manager the incumbent will be responsible to provide technical assistance to the Environmental Health and Safety Program and to the Radiation Safety Program. This position will provide assistance to and coordination of existing University Safety Programs and will assist in the development of new programs where needed. They will provide guidance and work directly with student safety assistants and provide training on safety programs at the University and other related duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the management of the Radiation Safety Program.
    • Assist with inspections and surveys of authorized radiation users.
    • Assist with management and collection of radiological waste.
    • Assist with inventory and survey of radiation sealed sources.
    • Assist with calibration of campus radioactive material survey monitoring equipment. 
  • Assist with management and disposal of hazardous materials and with the Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Programs.
    • Assist with chemical, radioactive, and bio-hazardous waste collection, storage, and disposal.
    • Assist with hazardous waste reduction and recycling efforts.
    • Assist with emergency planning and response relating to hazardous material incidents.
    • Inspection and maintenance of emergency eyewash and showers.
    • Conduct laboratory inspections for safety issues. 
  • Provide consultation and feedback regarding activities as they are related to safety requirements for the University
    • Provide guidance and documentation to questions related to occupational health and safety.
    • Respond to concerns related to OSHA rules and regulations.
    • Respond to concerns related to EPA rules and regulations.

Required Competencies

  • Must pass physical and wear a respirator.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and move over 100 lbs.
  • Basic computer knowledge Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Work well with others (staff faculty, students).

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate’s degree related to safety or environmental OR 3 years of directly related experience 
  • Chemical safety, use of monitoring equipment, HazMat experience
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and/or education in chemistry, safety, radiological safety or laboratories
  • Extensive computer knowledge in building spread sheets, Microsoft office and regulatory software
  • Industrial Hygienist
  • Certified Assistant Safety Professional or qualified to take the exam
  • Safety Director, Certified Safety Manager or qualified to take the exam
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or qualified to take the exam
