Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Center Director, Assistant Director and the ECE Services Supervisor II, the teacher assistant provides support to the ECE Services Supervisor II in the care and active supervision of children 18 months to age 12.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist the teacher in maintaining a developmentally appropriate classroom, including all children regardless of their abilities.
- Assist, as directed by the classroom teacher, in maintaining a rich and stimulating learning environment by meeting the enhanced requirements as described in Age-Appropriate Environmental Rating Scale, Edition 3 (required for Step 2 of ND Bright and Early) and a rating of at least a 5.
- Assist in maintaining a classroom environment that meets the individual child’s need for quiet and active play, both indoors and outdoors each day.
- As directed by the classroom teacher, make adaptations and accommodations in the daily routine to meet the individual needs of all children with or without special needs.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy setting that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respect their dignity and their contributions (I-1.5 Code of Ethical Conduct, NAEYC, May 2011).
- Assist in maintaining compliance with sections from Caring For Our Children, 4th Edition, that pertain to classroom environment standards (including, but no limited to, 5.3, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4)
- Assist classroom teacher in provide developmentally appropriate educational experiences, including all children regardless of ability.
- Follow all educational mandates as set forth by the Department of Health and Human Services, Early Childhood Services Rules for Licensed Childcare Centers and Licensed Preschool Programs, specifically the Childcare Center Early Childhood Services Chapter 75-03-10; specifically, 75-03-10-20.1; .2; .3; .4; .8; and .9.
- Assist the classroom teacher in providing daily educational experiences that meets the individual child’s need for quiet and active play opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, throughout each day.
- Assist in maintain the standards as set for Step 3 of ND Bright & Early by completing activities/duties as assigned by the classroom teacher that are developmentally appropriate and meet the ND Early Learning Guidelines and the principles of Emergent Curriculum, thereby promoting the physical, social, emotional, language, and intellectual development of young children.
- Assist in maintain compliance with sections from Caring for Our Children, 4th Edition, that pertain to education experience standards (including, but not limited to, 2.1 & 2.4.1)
- Assist the classroom teacher in maintaining the health and safety of the environment and the children.
- Assist in ensuring the environment meets the health and safety requirements of young children, specifically maintaining supervision by sight and sound of all children following the mandates as required by the Department of Human Services Early Childhood Education, ensuring compliance with Step 1 of Bright & Early ND, and the policies and procedures as outlined in the most current Teacher Guide.
- Requires that one be agile and strong. One may need to remove a child to safety of the office if they are engaging in aggressive or dangerous behavior
- As directed by the classroom teacher, assist in evaluating the health needs of children, daily, using the UCLC guidelines.
- Assist the classroom teacher in maintaining safe & healthy environment that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, & physical development & that respect their dignity & their contributions (I-1.5, Code of Ethical Conduct, NAEYC, May2011)
- Assist in maintain compliance with sections of Caring for Our Children, 4th Edition, that pertain to health and safety standards, including but not limited to, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, & 4.9.
- Assist classroom teacher in effectively and respectfully working with families.
- As directed by the classroom teacher, communicate with families and/or guardians daily.
- Maintain confidentiality of all families, except in cases where mandated by law.
- Promote a positive and friendly atmosphere to all families and/or guardians (i.e., extend warm welcomes, use eye contact, address individuals by their name, etc.).
- Communicate respectfully with all family members and/or guardians regardless of their individual lifestyles, parenting choices, or situations.
- Comply with all aspects of Section II: Ethical Responsibility to Families from the Code of Ethical Conduct by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (May 2011).
- Assist classroom teacher in welcoming UND Field experience students, student caregivers, volunteers, and foster grandparents.
- Assist the classroom teacher in modeling developmentally appropriate practices.
- Promote one’s personal and professional growth through continuing education, professional literature, and commitment to self-evaluation.
- Successfully complete a Department of Health and Human Services, Early Childhood Education approved basic childcare course within three months of employment OR complete the minimum required number of annual professional development hours as required by DHS.
- Successfully complete CPR/First Aid training within three months of employment and renew as required.
- Maintain familiarity and meet minimum requirements as indicated by the ND Department of Health and Human Services Chapter 75-03-10 (Childcare Center) and 75-03-11 (Preschool) Early Childhood Services licensing regulations to maintain Step 1 of Bright &Early ND.
- Maintain familiarity and meet minimum requirements for Steps 2 through 4 as indicated by ND Bright and Early.
- Maintain familiarity and strive to meet best practices as indicated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
- Participate in the local early childhood advocacy group and related activities.
- Be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care & education & stay informed through continuing education & training (I-1.1, Code of Ethical Conduct, NAEYC May 2011).
- Work effectively, respectfully, & professionally with a team of colleagues (Teamwork).

Required Competencies

- Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications (at least one of the following):
- 40 hours of professional Early Childhood professional development preparation to include 10 clock hours of training in each North Dakota Core Competency Areas: Families/Communities, Program Planning/Evaluation, and Professional Development and Leadership. The listed trainings must be delivered by an Early Childhood agency with expertise in the field such as Head Start, Growing Futures, US Military).
- Early Childhood Certificate from a vocational or technical school.
- One 3 semester credit college course directly applicable to one of the following ND Core Competency Areas: Families/Communities, Program Planning/Evaluation, and Professional Development and Leadership.
AND all of the following:
- 1 year of work experience in Early Childhood Education.
- Successful completion of the ND Department Health and Human Service Criminal History Fingerprinting Background Check.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Other License(s) or Certification(s): Upon being hired CPR/First Aid/AED Training and ND Growing Futures basic childcare course, “Getting Started”.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
