- $71,000 + depending on experience, annual
- 40 hours per week
- This position will work onsite.
Purpose of Position
The University of North Dakota police officers are certified and licensed and are required to enforce all criminal and traffic codes of the state of North Dakota, as well as enforcing the rules and regulations of the State Board of Higher Education and the University of North Dakota.
The Police Sergeant position exists is to help supervise and participate in the activities of a police patrol, traffic or other specialized squad/section responsible for an assigned shift; or perform responsible administrative staff duties. Supervision is exercised over Police Corporals, Police Officers, Police Recruits, Student Service Officers, and Non-Sworn (civilian) employees.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Protect the general public and welfare of the University community through the enforcement of all Federal, State and Municipal laws, as well as the regulations of the University of North Dakota as listed in the code of Student Life. Patrol all University property to enforce traffic laws, criminal laws, public service rules and regulations in our jurisdiction to include mutual aid provisions and extended jurisdiction.
- Issue warnings, citations and/or arrests for criminal and traffic law violators.
- Perform initial investigations on traffic and criminal violations and perform follow-up as assigned.
- Work with the States Attorney Office and local court systems; must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law.
- Locates and secure in custody all evidence.
- Prepare reports for/on criminal, traffic, investigative, and various assigned projects.
- Monitor University parking lots and residential streets for parking violations.
- Assist other agencies with various requests.
- Respond to all emergency calls and promote safety on campus property.
- Respond to all medical assists, fire, and hazardous material, etc., calls to include coordinating initial scene and evacuation that would be necessary.
- Provide talks, and presentations on safety, alcohol and drug awareness, assistance programs, self-protection, sexual assault awareness and any other programs as requested by the University community and the general public.
- Provide fingerprinting services to students, faculty, staff and visitors.
- Provide checks of environmental conditions that affect campus safety.
- Provide a 24 hours escort service to the University community.
- Assist in the investigation of aircraft accidents involving UND aircraft when possible.
- Educational right to know as it relates to accessing student records
- Responsible for the security of state and institutional buildings and grounds.
- Provide adequate building and grounds security by use of foot, bike and vehicle patrol.
- This would include climbing stairs and walking up to seven miles. Requires familiarity with buildings, fire alarms locations and exits.
- Noting and reporting improperly lit area, or unsecured access by appropriate personnel.
- Securing that area of assigned responsibility.
- Briefing of personnel through chain of command regarding unusual occupancies, events and other information regarding area.
- Occasionally perform building security officer duties, secure UND buildings for nights/weekends according to provided schedules.
- Provide access to buildings for authorized individual when required.

Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Has met licensing requirements or is eligible (out-of-state certification) to become a certified ND peace officer
- Must have three (3) years of experience as a police officer or equivalent in military or corrections and/or supervisory experience may be accepted to fulfill the three-year requirement
- Must have completed a minimum of 50 credit hours of college credit with a minimum 2.00 GPA. Must provide copy of transcript at time of application to be considered for the position.

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior supervisory experience and/or training
- Equivalent of 4 year college in criminal justice or related field
- Campus law enforcement experience
