Purpose of Position

The Instructional Designer position will provide faculty development in evidence-based teaching and education scholarship in a variety of formats and settings to students, faculty, and researchers of the SMHS in support of their curricula and best teaching practice, consulting with individual faculty and programs across the SMHS to identify and develop instructional media in a variety of formats, including video, audio, images, interactive simulations, tutorials, virtual reality, augmented reality, and other interactive media to support delivery of curriculum. This position will also work with the ADTL and the DIDT to identify future forward technologies and teaching modalities for potential adoption, training, and scholarship. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining the unit’s website, assisting the communication and marketing of faculty development, faculty develop workshops on instructional media, and specific instructional media support for the Media

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide curriculum support to the SMHS academic programs and units in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum at the school, program, and course levels on all of the SMHS campuses.
    • Provide curriculum support and consultations to medical and health sciences administration, faculty, and staff in the identification, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional content and media including (but not limited to) interactive online modules, virtual reality, augmented reality, simulations, and tutorials; audio, video, and print-based materials; in-person and hybrid experiences; active-learning strategies; and innovative technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence.
    • Provide instructional design support through phone, e-mail, virtually, and drop-in consultation and act as single point of contact to assist faculty in maintenance, design, and course content issues.
    • Provide formative and summative evaluation of developed materials, test development and outcomes assessment.
    • Serve on committees and working groups as directed to support Curriculum Evaluation and Management (CEM) and the mission of the SMHS Academic Affairs Office.
    • Identify new potential trends in medical and health sciences teaching and technologies and develop individual expertise, and propose training and dissemination strategies.
    • Provide instructional design and logistical support to curriculum technology initiatives at the SMHS (e.g., badging, polling, LMS).
  • Analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate faculty development options in support of teaching and learning on all of the SMHS campuses.
    • Assist the ADTL and the DIDT in faculty development activities as requested.
    • Assist with coordination, evaluation, and reporting on faculty development activities.
    • Provide workshops and/or courses to faculty to modify and enhance teaching methods and curriculum.
    • Participate in and support faculty learning communities.
    • Evaluate new trends in medical and health sciences faculty development.
    • Maintain faculty development print and digital resources.
    • Evaluate instructional technologies for their capacity to meet instructional needs and provide faculty training and assistance with integration.
    • Coordinate with Technology Resources and Library Resources to identify faculty development/support needs.
    • Research, develop, and model effective practices to support integration of educational technology on all of the SMHS campuses.
  • Design, maintain, staff and administer the technology support services associated with this position and the SMHS OAA, including the Media Recording Studio.
    • Maintain technology, including updating hardware and software, identifying repair and replacement needs, and conducting annual inventories and tagging of equipment.
    • Develop job aids and instructional support materials (e.g., videos, paper, web-based) for the use of technology and software resources.
    • Track and report on technology usage and consultations with faculty and staff.
    • Schedule training and access to the technology resources and provide support to faculty and staff in person and as needed.
    • Maintain budget and advocate for innovative and future-forward teaching technologies and recommend purchases and acquisition.
  • Coordinate with other offices and personnel to facilitate the mission of the SMHS Academic Affairs Office.
    • Assist Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and/or Director of Instructional Design and Technology with other activities as requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Learning Design, User Experience Design, Education, or a related field
  • Work experience using instructional design principles and techniques to inform, advise, and educate
    faculty/clients and staff and others on the use of instructional technology and instructional design principles in the support and development of curriculum materials in higher education settings.
  • Work experience or equivalent portfolio of work with design and delivery of online/interactive instructional products
  • Demonstrated evidence of classroom teaching or workshop delivery (face to face and at a distance) as a primary instructor.
  • Direct authoring experience in the creation of instructional media technologies including non-interactive (e.g., graphics, photography, video, audio) and interactive (e.g., tutorials, simulations, virtual reality, augmented reality) using a variety of programs (e.g., Blackboard, Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Sim Tutor, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, Sound Forge, Audacity, Photoshop, artificial intelligence, and/or other equivalent programs).
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Instructional Design, Learning Design, User Experience Design, Education, or a related field expected within 12 months of hire date
  • 3 years’ experience working with faculty in higher education and/or healthcare as an instructional designer
  • 2 years’ experience in designing and delivering workshops and one-to-one consultation for faculty/professional development
  • Experience with project management, program coordination, and/or program evaluation, including generating evaluation reports and visualizations from database queries and use of supporting software (e.g., Microsoft Project, databases, dashboards).
  • 1 year of experience with providing in-person, virtual, phone, and email support for the instructional use of learning/academic technologies such as Blackboard, Zoom, Mediasite, Captivate, Articulate, and/or similar platforms.
  • Experience identifying, evaluating, and recommending software and products to best fit academic needs.
