Salary/Position Classification

  • $77,000+ Annual, Dependent on Experience, Exempt
  • 40 hours (8:00 am to 4:30pm with occasional early morning and early evening hours outside of regular hours)
  • This position will work onsite at UND Grand Forks, ND campus

Purpose of Position

Medical student assessment is an essential fundamental and important aspect of medical education. Assessment in the medical program is regularly scheduled, at a minimum, every four weeks and consists of various testing modalities including: in-house multiple choice exams, in-house essay-style exams, in-house laboratory exams, in-house interviewing and physical examination assessments and standardized National Board of Medical Examiners customized assessment services exams, comprehensive basic science examinations and comprehensive basic science self-assessment exams along with weekly quizzes, readiness assurance tests and various formative quizzes. In addition to the regularly scheduled exams, remediation assessment occurs frequently, and on an ad hoc schedule. Administration and delivery of assessment requires a team of faculty and staff that not only possess technical expertise but are attentive to precision, detail, accuracy while under time limit pressures. This position provides management and administration of pre-clinical medical program assessment requirements and supervision of an assessment staff position and management of multiple proctoring staff and instructors. This is an integral component of the medical program that is supported by the Education Resources administrative unit.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Execute and supervise assessment activities in Phase 1 M.D. Curriculum 
    • Creation, delivery, completion, analysis, and timely communication of all assessment items in the Phase 1 Medical Curriculum
    • Supervise assessment related tasks
    • Supervise assessment assistant position and supervise and coordinate multiple staff and faculty proctors
    • Provide data collection and analysis of unit assessments
    • Working closely with directors, faculty, staff, and department chairs in preparation, delivery and implementation of assessment approaches Develop, implement and lead a systematic and integrated assessment and evaluation process
    • Ensure the office provides support to users of assessment software and provide technical assistance to program faculty, staff, students and school partners
    • Manage assessment software and provide technical assistance to program faculty, students and school partners
    • Provide administration, faculty, and student with data analysis and data-driven decision making for the Phase 1 medical students and medical program 
  • Digital management of assessment outcomes
    • Create, populate and maintain all NBME, Excel, and LEO databases related to assessment outcomes
    • Maintain & input all global and individual Phase 1 student gradebooks in all relevant databases
    • Provide assessment outcome data to the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions for entry into Campus Connection
    • Provide the Assistant Dean of Assessment with individual student assessment outcomes (for distribution to students)
    • Prepare data-based and statistical reports and summaries for the regular and scheduled distribution of outcomes to stakeholders and to respond to inquiries regarding assessment outcomes
    • Adhere to privacy, security, and confidentiality measures regarding student records and other sensitive information in accordance with university, state and federal regulations, policies and procedures
    • Distribute and input Step 1 and Step 2 Outcomes
  • NBME examination administration
    • Coordinate, compile, order and administer all pre-clerkship National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) based exams 
    • Work with the appropriate faculty and administrators to develop, edit, create, administer, and analyze all pre-clerkship CAS exams
    • Implement and coordinate all NBME exam-related proctoring activities. Including finding proctors/manage proctor schedule, reserve rooms, send memos to students and proctors
    • Provide training to all necessary faculty and staff to allow implementation of NBME-based examinations (including faculty training on CAS question selection and proctoring training for staff)
    • Manage student, faculty and staff exam-day activities for all NBME-based exams
    • Creating and assigning rosters for, and ordering, Phase 1 exams and Step 1 and 2 examinations
    • Maintain electronic and versatile filing systems for all related records pertaining to job duties
    • Proctor for Phase 1 and the Step Preparation course 
  • 10% - Provide exam-day technological assistance
    • 1. Provide exam-day technological assistance (troubleshooting) for all Phase 1 exams including assistance with low-level student software malfunctions and implementation of “back-up” computers, where needed
    • 2. Provide students with information regarding computer-related pre-testing needs and procedures (including exam software downloads and required operating systems or updates)
    • 3. Liaise with Information Technology to ensure that the technological needs and update schedules are coordinated to meet the needs of Assessment
  • NBME examination outcome distribution and review
    • Compile all NBME-related examination outcomes
    • Provide all NBME-related outcome data, in suitable format, to the involved staff, faculty and students
    • Analyze individual question outcomes for all NBME CAS exams to determine if questions meet post-hoc statistical standards for inclusion on exam

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Assessment, Psychology, or an educationally related field that focuses on assessment or educational evaluation. Or a Bachelors degree and 4 years of directly related experience.
  • 3 years’ experience in educational assessment or database management/administration
  • Experience with scheduling and time management
  • Experience with data collection, data entry, data interpretation and analysis. Experience may be related to academic coursework.
  • 5 years’ experience as faculty or staff in a school setting
  • Flexibility to occasionally work into the early morning and early evening
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in related field
  • Experience in calendar management
  • Experience with NDUS, UND, and/or SMHS Policies
  • Experience with the purpose and operation of the medical curriculum at the SMHS
