Purpose of Position

This position offers a unique opportunity to work with UND’s leadership, faculty, staff and students to shape the future of AI within the institution. This position will lead our university's initiative to incorporate and advocate for best practices in thinking about and incorporating artificial intelligence across the curriculum, help develop policy, develop partnerships internally and externally imperative for AI advancement, and ensure ethical use of AI. This visionary leader will work collaboratively with faculty, administration, staff and students to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for integrating AI education and tools into various disciplines, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared for the AI-driven future.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide Strategic Leadership, Development and Implementation on AI

  • Work closely with UND’s administration for all AI development and implementation across UND.
  • Develop and implement an across the curriculum strategy for supporting and integrating AI across all academic programs.
  • Collaborate with University leadership on AI-related policy and strategic plan implementation.
  • Co-Chair the AI Committee appointed by UND Leadership.
  • Represent UND through NDUS AI initiatives.
  • Anticipate and navigate educational opportunities and disruptions associated with AI advancements.
  • Establish relationships both within UND and externally to stay current with AI trends and best practices in higher education. 

AI Governance, Policy Development, and Metrics

  • Co-lead with UIT AI’s position to establish governance structures and guidelines for AI advancement and adoption and use within the university.
  • Develop policies related to use of AI and ethical considerations for administrators, faculty, staff and students.
  • Develop metrics and reporting for AI adoption, curricular use, progressive use of AI to measure AI adoption across campus. 

Lead Faculty Development, Curriculum Development and Integration, Student Success and Career Readiness on AI

  • Design and facilitate faculty development programs to enhance AI literacy and competency in teaching AI concepts and skills. Work with faculty to support student learning goals around digital and AI literacy.
  • Cultivate a culture of AI professional learning for faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with TTaDA’s Director of Faculty Development, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, other AI positions within UND, UND Writing Center, and other departments to plan programming around identified needs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, programs, departments and colleges to identify opportunities for AI integration within existing courses and programs.
  • Foster cross-disciplinary collaborations to create interdisciplinary AI teaching and learning experiences.
  • Develop and lead the AI Across the Curriculum Program, ensuring comprehensive coverage across disciplines.
  • Enhance student career readiness by ensuring AI skills are integrated into relevant programs and in collaboration with the Experiential Learning opportunities on campus.
  • Identify and address potential gaps in AI education across the curriculum and incorporate ways to fill the gaps. 

Guide Internal Collaboration and External Engagement to Ensure UND is Represented and a Leader in AI Initiatives

  • Serve as a liaison with the graduate school, colleges, programs, and other relevant units on AI-related issues.
  • Organize and present workshops to promote AI awareness and competency.
  • Lead AI related initiatives throughout UND in alignment with the President and Provost requests.
  • Advocate for responsible AI integration in higher education through professional organizations, committee work, etc.
  • Partner with external organizations, professional associations, and leaders in the field to advance AI within the University of North Dakota.
  • Represent UND in AI-related work. 

Lead AI Innovation and Ethical Use of AI

  • Advocate for appropriate and responsible use within academic units across campus.
  • Work closely with faculty on policy development for AI use.
  • Research AI trends in higher education and industry and provide avenues for conversation across campus. 

Participate in Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned

  • Attend professional development (one paid conference per year through TTaDA) to stay relevant on AI best practices.
  • Support the workplace culture by demonstrating the professional conduct and values expected of all UND employees.
  • Represent the University of North Dakota in AI education matters within the North Dakota University System (NDUS) and beyond.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in English, Composition, Communications, Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science or related field
  • 5 years of experience in higher education and faculty development
  • Professional experience using AI applications in higher education such as large language models, natural language processing, image generators, code generators (and specifically generative AI programs such as ChatGPT, copilot, Claude, Notebook LM, Midjourney, Adobe, Scite, Perplexity, Research Rabbit)
  • Experience with AI model development (e.g., writing, fine-tuning, or advanced prompting) 
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience writing professional correspondence and reports
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with multiple AI tools for searching, mapping, reading papers, multidoc chat, writing and editing, and data used in higher education
