Fire and Rescue NSW is one of the world’s largest urban fire and rescue services and the busiest in Australia. With a critical role in protecting communities across NSW, Fire and Rescue NSW is seeking a Principal Legal Officer (Commercial) to provide expert legal advice across complex commercial, procurement and operational matters.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Legal & Regulatory Services, you will provide senior, independent legal advice across a broad range of commercial and operational matters. The role offers exposure to complex procurement, contract negotiation and whole-of-government initiatives in a dynamic, high-impact environment.

Key areas of focus include:

• Providing strategic legal advice on commercial, procurement and governance matters
• Drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements and contracts including a focus on ICTA and MICTA
• Advising on tenders, procurement processes and contract management
• Supporting inter-agency agreements, MOUs and collaboration arrangements
• Advising senior stakeholders on legal risk and policy implications

This role operates within a complex, high-volume and fast-moving environment, requiring pragmatic, solutions-focused legal advice across diverse operational and commercial issues.

About You

We are seeking a senior commercial lawyer who brings:

• 6+ years post-qualification experience
• A strong customer focus and problem solving skills
• Strong experience in commercial law and procurement – ideally including experience working within the NSW Government MICTA/ICTA Framework.
• Experience within government, public sector, or highly regulated environments (desirable)
• Experience advising senior stakeholders and executives
• Strong drafting and negotiation capability across complex agreements
• Ability to deliver practical, risk-based legal advice

Essential Requirements

• Admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
• Current practising certificate
• Demonstrated senior-level commercial legal experience
