Position Purpose 
This position provides individual, small group and large group instruction to students based on children's individual developmental level; ages 2-5 years old. This position works in collaboration with parents to assist children in reaching their full potential. This position develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This position develops, implements, and monitors the students’ Individualized Education Programs in collaboration with parents and other IEP Team members. This position promotes a collaborative relationship with school staff and parents that will foster inclusionary practices.

Essential Functions

  1. Assumes the responsibilities of a special education teacher.
  2. Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), plans curriculum, develops individualized lesson plans and prepares instructional materials that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students, considering the Virginia Standards of Learning, local requirements, and physical, emotional, and academic levels of development.           
  3. Instructs students in all areas specified by the IEP.  
  4. Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques, i.e., hands-on, student interaction, lecture, group work, etc., to present instructional content to the students. 
  5. Plans, integrates, and utilizes technology for classroom instruction.
  6. Utilizes assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  7. Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to students for all learning activities.
  8. Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with IEP using a variety of positive behavioral supports.
  9. Participates in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
  10. Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for purposes of evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education.         
  11. Participates in staff, department and special education committee meetings and training as required.         
  12. Maintains a system of record keeping and data collection following required procedures as outlined in the Special Education Procedural Guidance Manual.
  13. Assists children with proper health training and self-help activities, such as eating, dressing and personal hygiene.     
  14. Participates in specialized staff development activities to improve job related skills and apply “Best practices” in working with students with disabilities.        
  15. Collaborates, in a co-teaching situation, with general education classroom teacher to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, ensure implementation of student’s required accommodations  and/or modifications, provide curriculum coordination between general and special education, and evaluate the student’s educational progress.       
  16. Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistant(s) and/or other staff.           
  17. Plans, schedules, implements, and supervises the daily program, which emphasizes appropriate developmental experiences for preschool children.
  18. Supervises the outdoor and indoor play areas in such a way that children's safety can be easily monitored and ensured.
  19. Assists in planning and coordinating field trips that relate to and extend educational experiences.
  20. Makes regular home visits, holds parent teacher conferences, and maintains open communication with parents.
  21. Eats breakfast and lunch with children; encourages children to engage in conversation and promotes a pleasant atmosphere during mealtime; uses meal periods and food as an integral part of the total education program.
  22. Knows and implements NAEYC best-practice guidelines, Virginia learning and development standards; and assists other staff members in implementing these standards.
  23. Assures that equipment and materials are accessible, appropriate and in good condition; reports any unsafe conditions to the Administrative Coordinator, Supervisor, and the building principal.
  24. Participates in the recruitment, screening, and enrollment of all eligible children.
  25. Maintains an inventory of classroom materials and participates in the ordering of appropriate classroom supplies and equipment.
  26. Perform such additional tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned or delegated by school administration.


Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as; personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. 

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. 

Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Contract. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and to enter data into a computer.
  • See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
  • Some teaching specialties (i.e., music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision and physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

Certification/License:

 

  • State Certification as an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher or as required for position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus.
