Job Duties

Position is responsible for providing quality educational programs that enable incarcerated youth and adults to become responsible, productive, tax-paying members of their community. Also, provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current students records for the assigned student.

Minimum Qualifications

The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment. The ability to maintain accurate records, knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of the basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs. Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories; Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Must have at least two years' full time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last 5 years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.

Licenses: Must possess the ‘Master Barber Technical Professional License’ issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and ‘Barber’s license/certification’ or a ‘Technical Professional License’ in the related trade area/field issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Must be eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.

If you do not currently hold a teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE):
1. You must submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) during the first 90 days of employment.
2. Obtaining a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period is employee’s responsibility and is required to continuing employment at the Department of Corrections (VADOC).

If you qualify for reciprocity, you must submit a current, out-of-state, teaching license with a comparable endorsement along with any other document given with the license. The license must be current when VDOE receives the license packet.
