General Information:

The College of Arts and Letters Graduate Assistant will assist with career readiness programming for students and engagement with alumni. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with members of the Dean's office, University Career Center, and other stakeholders.

This position is for the 2025 Spring Semester and will pay 9 credit hours of tuition.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Final duties assigned will be selected based on best alignment with candidates strengths. Duties can include:

• Coordinate Student Advisory Council meetings and events in consultation with the Director of Professional Development and Engagement.

• Assist with regular communications to students in the college related to career readiness programming. This includes regular emails to students, leading the social media student advisory council sub-committee to draft content, and other communications as determined.

• Create career readiness resources for students and prospective students. This includes a Career Readiness Canvas Course, content used for flyers, brochures, digital signage.

• Assist with college-wide career readiness programming that supplements the work of the Career Center. This includes the Career Readiness Conference, Career Treks, and events with related speakers or presentations.

• Serve as a representative on college-wide committee chaired by the Director of Professional Development and Engagement.

• Gather and track student and alumni data.

 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree required and must be enrolled in graduate program classes at JMU for the Spring 2025 semester.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (primarily Word, Outlook, and Excel).

• Strong oral and written communication skills required.

• Ability to work with different groups of people such as students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

• Must be able to take initiative and work independently as well as with a team.

• Experience with leadership of others preferred.

• Establish and follow a work schedule in conjunction with site supervisor. Will need to be flexible for occasional events outside of typical office hours.

• Complete assigned projects in a timely, organized, and professional manner.

• Communicate consistently with site supervisor about success, challenges, and concerns.

• Request assistance when needed.

• Develop knowledge and skills in project management.

• Maintain confidentiality.

• Collaborate with personnel in the office, and across campus.

 

Conditions of Employment:  

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or agency

After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
