General Information:

The Department of Computer Science at James Madison University invites applications for two tenure-track or renewable term appointment (RTA) positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, to serve in the new Information Technology Major within the Department of Computer Science, to begin August 2025. The B.Sc. in Information Technology (IT) is one of the two undergraduate degrees offered by the Department of Computer Science (CS) at JMU. IT has a focus on computer networking, cyber security, web technologies, data science/machine learning and mobile development. The IT program accepted our first freshman class in Fall 2022, has more than 240+ students, and is rapidly growing. The IT major puts students in the middle of the IT revolution where they study the tools and methods deployed in the enterprise community in areas such as communication network, software defined network, information security and wireless networks. The JMU Computer Science Department is a dynamic and supportive community with 31 full-time faculty members and approximately 900 undergraduate students in the CS and IT majors. We also offer an online M.S. Degree in Computer Science concentration in Cyber-Security. Our supportive community is dedicated to maintaining a culture that balances excellence in teaching and small class sizes with opportunities for faculty and student research. Active clubs and organizations include TechLink, Women in Technology, Robotics, Forensics, Unix Club, Cyber Defense, and a student ACM chapter.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Applicants from all areas of specialization within IT are encouraged to apply. One of the two lines will fill the need in the Machine Learning/AI, while the other line is open to include any of the foundation-level classes and junior/senior level classes. We especially welcome candidates with a background in Web Technologies, Machine Learning, Database Systems, Web and Mobile Development, and/or Computer Networks and Information Security. CS, IT, and JMU as a whole support and encourage opportunities for professional development. Qualifications:

A Doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc., etc.) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field at the time of employment is required for tenure-track appointments. A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field combined with significant professional experience in a relevant field is required for renewable term appointments (RTAs). Preference will be given to applicants who can provide high quality teaching at the undergraduate level with the potential to develop and sustain an undergraduate-oriented research program.
