General Information:

James Madison University, a Division I member of the NCAA and Sun Belt Conference, is accepting applications for a Director of Basketball Success. This position is full time and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success in the organization, coordination and implementation of academic support services for student-athletes.
  • Components include academic advising as part of official university advising system, summer orientation, weekly monitoring meetings on academic status of student-athletes, all sport study hall, travel letters, summer school, progress reports to faculty, recruiting tutorial support and academic awards and recognition programs.
  • Assist student-athletes with university processes which affect continuing academic eligibility such as major and minor declaration, permission to transfer, transfer credit evaluation, etc.
  • Monitor academic progress of student-athletes on assigned teams.
  • Make necessary and appropriate referrals to campus resources, provide timely and accurate reports on academic progress of student-athletes to Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success and coaches.
  • Assist probation and suspension students with academic recovery plans, coordinate absence letters for student-athletes who miss class due to athletic travel, assist in declaration of major process, assist with coordination of academic progress reports to faculty.
  • Monitor NCAA progress toward graduation and continuing academic eligibility for all student-athletes in assigned sports, maintain up-to-date knowledge of JMU degree progress reports, majors, minors and pre-professional programs and how they affect continuing academic eligibility.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, Sunbelt Conference, NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Represent Student-Athlete Services on departmental, campus and civic committees, in teaching assignments and activities when requested.
  • Other Duties as assigned by Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success to include specific assignments.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience advising collegiate student athletes
  • Proven experience working with diverse populations
  • Previous work experience in higher education
  • Previous experience working at a Division 1 institution
  • Knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and progress towards degree completion requirements
  • Ability to work nights and weekends

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree
  • 2-3 years working as an athletic academic advisor
  • Previous experience working with at-risk individuals
  • Previous advising experience working with basketball collegiate student athletes.
