General Information:

Do you love punctuation, spelling and grammar? Enjoy catching mistakes and making sure they get fixed? The Office of Annual Giving (OAG) is seeking an eagle-eyed typo tamer to join our team. As a Student Proofreader, you'll primarily review our mass communication with alumni, families, students and donors — email and text messages, print pieces and advertising — to ensure it’s spotless. This position will be part of a team of student employees who engage with the JMU community and support university initiatives by talking with people on the phone, handwriting thank-you notes, texting congratulations, etc.

The Student Proofreader must be detail-focused, able to manage multiple projects at once on a deadline, and team-oriented. They must be passionate about JMU and eager to make a positive impact.

Student Proofreader is expected to work 2-3 shifts per week, 9 hours total. Work will be at the Leeolou Alumni Center. The position starts as soon as possible, with the possibility of working through the calendar year.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Use AP Style to review materials and note spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation mistakes for correction.
• Note any visual style inconsistencies (e.g. fonts, subheading style, formatting).
• Check that professional colleagues have implemented all revisions accurately and without the introduction of new errors.
• Compare standard inclusions (e.g. return address, signature blocks) to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Be the “last look” for quality control.
• During times when proofreading demands are few, participate in outreach across campus to strengthen JMU’s culture of philanthropy within student organizations and classes.
• Maintain confidentiality of donor records and enter data with accuracy.
• Attend trainings, planning sessions, and meetings (included in weekly hours).
• Perform additional duties assigned by the Office of Annual Giving (OAG) in conjunction with their Annual Solicitation & Stewardship calendar.

 

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as a JMU student.
• WRTC, SCOM, or English major preferred
• Sophomore – Senior preferred
• Able to attend trainings throughout the semester.
• Familiar with James Madison University and/or strong willingness to learn about the school.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Works well as a team member.

Conditions of Employment:  

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
