JMU is a selective, public institution with a growing national reputation for offering experiences that lead to an outstanding education and inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff. The student body includes approximately 20,000 undergraduate and 1,900 graduate students, with over 1,000 full-time instructional faculty.

General Information:

University Advising’s well-respected Madison Advising Peers (MAP) program consists of undergraduate peer advisors who are trained to provide supplemental academic advising for JMU students in conjunction with faculty and full-time academic advisors. Madison Advising Peers are friendly, supportive, and knowledgeable resources for their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs are selected based on a formal interview, academic record, experience, and attitude. This offer of employment is contingent on budget availability.

• Increase student knowledge of and confidence in utilizing academic advising tools (e.g., MyMadison and course catalog) and campus resources, while making appropriate referrals.
• Help students understand their role in the academic advising process and how best to work with their faculty or full-time advisor.
• Employ active listening skills to clearly understand student concerns and questions. Demonstrate empathy and respect for students’ right to make their own decisions.
• Increase student awareness of special opportunities on campus, such as study abroad, internships, and competitive scholarships.
• Contribute to student outreach and events and deliver workshops to students on academic topics that include degree requirements, academic planning, General Education, and academic success skills.
• Use the CRM (known to students as MyMadison Connect) for both scheduled and drop-in advising appointments; provide appointment availability and finish appointments by recording notes and closing out records.
