Job Summary/Basic Functions

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as the CAS Grounds Supervisor! The primary job duty of the Landscape and Grounds (L & G) Supervisor is the supervision of all University main campus groundskeeping crews and directing/taking part in the planting, pruning, and cultivating of trees, shrubs and flowers and the seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming of University main campus grounds. The L & G Maintenance Supervisor supervises the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris and trash from all University grounds, instructs and manages Grounds Lead Workers in the proper use of tools and equipment (this includes both gas- and battery-powered equipment) and assists the Landscape and Grounds Manager in administration and management of grounds functions.


This position has been designated as essential to the operation of the department and will require reporting to work when the university is officially closed, and is subject to overtime. This position is also subject to overtime and schedule changes and may be required to work shifts during weekends, holidays and special events.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the federal and Virginia state regulations governing the use, control, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides and similar chemicals.
  • Working knowledge of landscaping, irrigation techniques and ornamental plant and turf management.
  • Understanding of the university’s email and work order systems.
  • Supervisory and staff administrative skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Budget and purchase management, inventory control and equipment management skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks, prioritize work, plan and propose recommendations for change.
  • Ability to develop, update and monitor grounds maintenance, snow removal, severe weather preparation and preventive maintenance plans.
  • Ability to operate push and riding power mowers, chain saws, commercial tractors/backhoes and similar grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities, develop an effective work force, promote teamwork and provide daily direction to the workforce based on policy guidelines.

Required Experience:

  • Considerable experience in commercial Grounds Maintenance and experience in commercial grounds maintenance supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience with horticultural pesticide application.

 

Additional Considerations:

KSAs

  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs to assist in daily record keeping and documentation.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

  • Virginia (VDACS) Pesticide Applicator certification (or ability to acquire within six months of start date) in any or all of the following categories: turf, ornamental, right of way.
